The “If” reflection

U.N._Logo

Social Enterprise’s goal is to innovate , transform and help people’s projects around the world but if the United Nations was fully founded why would we need them?

The United Nations, since their creation in 1945 have for mission to diminish conflicts , inequalities and prevent the horrible actions that men are capable of. If this organization had a enormous fund and was given a capital importance by every country , maybe the world would have known a different course, a course where globalization skyrocketed with most countries being developed. In this case Social Entreprise would be useless, there would be no need for them.

Nevertheless  a French saying dictates that ” Only with “ifs ” you could but Paris in a bottle” and I would like to apply it to my reflection here. In my opinion it is a enormous waste of time to treat situations starting with an” if”, because if they do it means that they are imaginary deviated courses of reality.  Today we need Social entreprise because even tough we posses United Nations the world will never be fair , there will always be inequalities, poverty and conflicts and instead of trying to to explore to possibilities in the “what if ?” category we should underline , support and push projects and ideas that attempt to fix this.

Turkish Firm Yildiz Holding Expands , Buying Famous BN biscuits

imgres-1 imgres

BNs are biscuits known to a majority of children in France and Europe for their funny smiles and sweet tastes with flavors range from chocolate , hazelnuts to strawberry.  Originally from the UK , BN was sold by Blackstone and PAI partners to Yildiz Holding, the biggest snack and beverage company of Turkey,  for 2 billion British pounds (3.19657 billion U.S. ).

Although absent in the UK, it is  already present in Turkey, North America, the Middle East , North Africa , China and Japan. This purchase will expand Yildiz by conquering the British market (where BN is the number one biscuit) and other European markets. This enormous investment might , in my opinion , pay off very well for Yildiz because risks are minimized by the fact that BN biscuits will continue to thrive in Europe for a long time.

I can’t predict the future but as a French person who travelled around Europe for two months and who goes back to France regularly I can tell that BN are still everywhere and kids love them as they did when I was younger. If Apple sits on the top of the mobile and computer technology , BN locked its position as the good and sweet biscuit in every kids and families mind.

Mine project threatened by First Nation Tribe

Tsilhqot’in set to declare site of New Prosperity mine a tribal park

Taseko a Canadian mining company , is trying to implant a copper and gold mine , the New prosperity mine, at Fish Lake, which is very close to the tribal’s park border.  The natives claim that because of activities such as hunting and fishing , the mine project would actually be within the boundaries and should respond to First Nation’s decisions.

This opposition threaten’s Taseko’s enormous investment ( $1.1 billion dollars) in the New prosperity project. Nevertheless, if we take in account a minimum of business ethics we can see that this project which was” twice rejected by federal panels and the federal government” actually represent a great danger for the Tribal park ecosystem with “damage to fish and fish habitat”. Furthermore I think that a threat to Taseko’s profits is far less important and relevant compared to the ecological consequences tied to the mine’s activity.

Mothers daily behaviors threatening the baby food market

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rebecca-todd-peters/pernicious-moms-threaten-_b_5318590.html

To save money, be environment friendly and to introduce their babies to general gastronomic culture, mothers nowadays tend to cook simple infant meals  rather than buying  industry made baby food. By doing so mothers threatens the profits of compagnies such as Beech-Nut. The article argues that , in this case , the baby food makers should be more concerned about social responsibilities rather than “market share and profit margins.”. It opposes Milton Friedman’s article “The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Profits” which states that businesses should maximize their profit within the rules ( no fraud or deception) but not spend their capital on social matters. Rebecca Todd Peters contradicts this by encouraging compagnies in the baby food market  to care for a more about the well being of the society, here support a “healthy, environmentally beneficial trend”. Furthermore,  even tough she recognizes the important place and role of the goods created by business profits, she conveys that our society has today put capitalism over social values , eventually advising firms to take a new direction.
