Accomplishment Statement: Gained experience in new GIS tools: buffer, reclassify, overlay to analyze metro Vancouver’s vulnerability in the case of a tsunami.
This lab was intended to assess the vulnerability of Vancouver in the occurrence of a tsunami. Much of Vancouver is safe from harm because of Vancouver Island blocking the mainland, however some coastal areas would still be at risk.
I used the intersect tool to isolate healthcare and education facilities in their perspective data files. The intersect tool allowed for all data that fell within the danger buffered zone to be transferred to a new layer. Signage should be placed in these areas to ensure proper precaution is provided to residents of these areas should the threat of a tsunami manifest into Vancouver’s reality.
Vancouver Danger Zones:
Several well-known facilities are at risk in the case of a tsunami:
Healthcare: Broadway Pentecostal Lodge, False Creek Residence, Villa Cathay Care Home, Yaletown House Society
Education: École Rose Des Vents, False Creek Elementary, Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Henry Hudson Elementary, St. Anthony of Padua
