Week 11-03.16

In this meeting we discussed the images from the assignment.

There were various approaches -all valid- but I would like to emphasize the central idea which was to create an object  through several images. Object is here understood as a set of perceptions, experiences or an event.

We also commented on the temporal element of the works. We could distinguish

  • sequences, where one can see a set of consecutive events,
  • instants, here the images seem to encompass a brief span of time
  • in a third group we could include the sets in which the images are clearly set apart in time, but is hard to decide how much

In photography time is an implicit element and some artists have made it explicit in their work:

  • Etienne Jules-Marey and Eadweard Muybridge created sequences to study movement. As a result their images manage to convey a sense of expanded time.
  • Henry Cartier-Bresson created a monumental oeuvre on his ability to capture a decisive instant. For him, sensitivity, intuition and a sense of geometry are essential qualities of a photographer: ‘either you have it or not’. On the other hand, he also acknowledges that such instant ‘is always luck’.
  • David Hockney- Creates photographic collages and composites polaroids. The resulting image is an agregate of fragmented instants, each one an image in themselves.
  • Hiroshi Sugimoto- By holding the lens open for the duration of a whole film, Sugimoto goes beyond stories, cinematography or movie stars and distilles the essence of cinema: light+time.
