Bajaj Auto’s $2000 Quad
Quad or the RE60, is an example of a quadricycle in India. It is manufactured by Bajaj Auto. Bajaj is a key company in India producing three wheelers and the RE60 is the first step in their new venture. Bajaj RE60 was expected to challenge Tata Nano in India. However the RE60 is not legally classified as a car and therefore cannot be sold to individuals.
In 2013, the Indian government classified it as a quadricycle. It cannot reach speeds of 90km/h and therefore can only be used for commercial purposes to replace Auto Rickshaws (Tuk Tuks). It is a safer option than the rickshaws that are in use as of now. The Quad has got doors and a space for 2+2. It is provided with seat belts for the front seats aswell as the rear seats.
This quadricycle was launched for export at $2000 or Rs. 130,000. It has got such low prices because of the less number of parts fitted. The company has also thought about the safety and the marketing points that would make the Quad a better buy than an Auto Rickshaw.
Bajaj wants to export Quad as it has an even bigger export market than in India. This is just a start for the company into a new frontier and now they will expand to make it big and compete against anyone else, including Tata motors.
