ENGL 301 is an English course that explores effective professional communication. It is a way for students to become accustomed to writing types of documents they may not be familiar with, or to correct any bad habits if they have written them before. The course allows students to flourish professionally in this sense. There is more of a focus on online communication and social media then in other more traditional English courses. An emphasis is also put on team work in the writing process as students work collaboratively on a formal report as well as peer review eachother’s work.
I expect that when handled correctly, the course will be manageable in its workload and learning expectations. I am interested to see what kind of feedback I will get from my peers on my work. Some of it is sure to be controversial and disagreeable to me, but there will likely be some tips that give me new insight into a more effective writing style. I think this is the difference between students that put work into thinking critically about writing and students that just need to pass another course. The former group fits me better. I fear that students that put in too much effort into a particular task tend to have a lower GPA than those that just do the bare minimum to get a good grade. This allows them to spread their efforts evenly on all the course work they need to do instead of lagging behind in classes they don’t have time for. So often students that think too much about their writing do worse academically. I tend to be an uncompromising perfectionist and this has been compromising academically. If I can learn to put reasonable effort into each English assignment, I get without overexerting myself than I am sure I will do well in this ENGL 301 and my other courses as well.
