Unethical marketing strategies of skinny models in the fashion industry.

Looking like a skeleton is unattractive, unrealistic and unhealthy.  Who said models had to be stick skinny?!  Women of all shapes and sizes should be able to model.  The marketing strategies in the fashion industry is extremely unethical.

The media has a bad portrayal of what image a woman should look like. Models you see on the runway do not look like women in the real world. Why do we only see skinny models in billboards, movies, and music videos?  There is a problem with the marketing strategies of skinny models in the fashion industry.  An average size female in the real world is considered a “plus-size” model in the fashion industry.  There needs to be a change.

Tyra Banks is a very successful example of a plus-size model.  She once stated that skinny models should be off the runway and real size women should model instead.  She decided to make a difference by starting a campaign called “Beauty Inside and Out”.  It’s mission was to expand the definition of beauty by doing a plus-size model search, in which Tyra called the “Fiercely Real Model” search.  Now Tyra even has her own television show called “The Tyra Banks Show”.  Once on the show she said “If I had lower self-esteem I would be starving myself right now!” infront of thousands of women. Tyra Banks is the role model of many woman and demonstrates what a woman looks like in reality.

The main cause of this problem is social pressure.  Social pressure is what leads many women to eating disorders because they think they have to be as skinny as models.  If we wanted to change this there are two things we need to accomplish:  1) We will first have to reduce social pressure, and 2) Get rid of the bad portrayal of models having to be skinny in people’s minds.  Companies need to act as agents of change to promote healthy eating, weight-control practices, and realistic body images.  Women of all shapes and sizes should be able to model.  Women of all shapes and sizes should be able to strut on the runway looking attractive, realistic and healthy.
