Prior negation, current neutral – story text:

  1. Mary is at the airport
  2. Mary: “I’m going to visit my friend Bob in Springtown.”
  3. Person at the airport: “Oh! Don’t eat Chinese. There are no good Chinese restaurants in Springtown.”
  4. Bob: “Welcome, Mary!”
  5. Mary: “Hi Bob!”
  6. A couple of days later…
  7. Bob: “Do you want to go out to dinner tonight?”
  8. Mary: “Yes!”
  9. Bob: “Want to eat Chinese food?”
  10. Mary: “Aren’t there no good Chinese restaurants here?”

Prior neutral, current negation – story text:

  1. Mary is flying to visit her friend Bob in Springtown.
  2. Mary (thinking): “I hope there are some good restaurants in Springtown.”
  3. Bob: “Welcome, Mary!”
  4. Mary” “Hi Bob!”
  5. A couple of days later.
  6. Bob: “Do you want to go out to dinner tonight?”
  7. Mary: “Yes!”
  8. Bob: “We’ll have to eat greasy burgers, is that ok?”
  9. Mary: “Are there no good restaurants here?”

  1. Mary is at the airport.
  2. Mary: “I’m going to visit my friend Bob in Springtown.”
  3. Person at the airport: “Nice! There is a good Chinese restaurant there, you should try it.”
  4. Bob: “Welcome, Mary!”
  5. Mary: “Hi, Bob!”
  6. A couple of days later.
  7. Bob: “Do you want to go out to dinner tonight?”
  8. Mary: “Yes!”
  9. Bob: “Where shall we go?”
  10. Mary: “Isn’t there a good Chinese restaurant here?”
