2018-2019. Teaching Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF), UBC $36,676 (PI: Tim Huh; Co-Applicants: Gregory Werker, Sunah Cho, Rob Peregodoff, & Hossein Piri) – Enhancing Personalized Learning and Engagement in a Class with Large Enrolment

Introduction to Quantitative Decision Making (COMM 290), a required course for every Sauder BCom student, is regarded as one of the most challenging commerce courses in the first year. While the sections of this course are large, approximately 230 students each, due to the interdisciplinary nature of commerce education and varying high school preparation, there is substantial variability among students in terms of their exposure and understanding of the curriculum content.
In this project, we aim to enhance personalized learning and student engagement with course content, instructors, peers, TAs and Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) leaders. Our objectives were to develop a series of tutorial videos and online quizzes with automated, immediate and tailored feedback so that students can adapt resources depending on their learning needs. We believe the development of these resources will contribute to the improvement of student learning.

Student Contributors
- Albina Gibadullina – Project Coordinator, Albina is a Masters student at the department of (Human) Geography at UBC, having graduated from Sauder BCom (Finance, degree with honours) in 2017. Having taken COMM 290 in 2013, she has been involved with this course in various capacities since 2014, including being a PASS leader and a TA twice. Albina’s long term goal is to pursue a career in academia.
- Vanja (VJ) Terzic – Project Coordinator, VJ is UBC Sauder MBA 2018 graduate. His work as a consultant and entrepreneurial business instructor with the Ch’nook Indigenous Business Education Center at UBC has sparked his interest in teaching. He has also volunteered as a business instructor with Sauder Social Entrepreneurship (SSE) Kenya and Junior Achievement BC. His post MBA ambitions involve working with social enterprises in various capacities; as educator, facilitator, and strategist.
- Alexa Rudakoff – Alexa graduated with honours from the Accounting option of the Sauder BCom program in 2018. At UBC, she served as a Teaching Assistant for several BCom and Master of Management courses and enjoyed how these roles allowed her to mentor other students. Alexa will be entering her first year at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in the fall and plans to incorporate her business background from Sauder in pursuit of a career in corporate law.
- Arkie Liu – Arkie is currently a third-year student at Sauder, specializing in Finance and BTM. She absolutely loves being a Teaching Assistant, as nothing is more rewarding than helping students achieve their “a-ha!” moments. Arkie has no idea what she wants to do with her future, but she knows that teaching is where her passion lies and that learning will be a huge part of her life – oh, and lots of laughter, too!
- Bosung Kim – Bosung is a postdoctoral researcher in the operations & logistics division at Sauder. Broadly speaking, he conducts a supply chain management research based on quantitative models. He taught COMM290 in this summer and enjoyed the discussion with the students. He is also interested in teaching operations management to students. His future goal is pursuing career in research and teaching in a university.
- Emily Hodgson – Emily is currently a third-year student at Sauder, specializing in finance and minoring in economics. Her work with the Ch’nook Indigenous Business Education Center as an adult education facilitator in the downtown eastside is what opened her up to the idea of teaching. Emily enjoys backcountry camping, trail running, and other other outdoor activities in her free time.
- Godot Bian – Godot is currently finishing her final year at Sauder, specializing in Business Combine Computer Science. She has worked as a 290 TA and CLC math coach more than once and enjoyed talking to students. As a big fan of technology, she hopes to write computer programs that bring happiness to people.
- Lincoln Lin – Lincoln is currently a 4th-year accounting student at Sauder. Thanks to his instructors, he has been making solid progress in preparing for his future career. He believes that every course he has taken at Sauder requires time and effort, but it’s undoubtedly worthwhile. He hopes you enjoy the process of growing as much as he does.
- Maddie Zapach – Born and raised in frigid Calgary, Alberta, Maddison Zapach is an avid skier, skater, and tobogganer. She graduated from Holy Trinity Academy in 2016, and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree from UBC with a dual specialization in Accounting and OpLog. In 2018, she served as the CUS Ombudsperson and CLC PASS Leader for Comm 290, and she recently enrolled in the Commerce Scholar’s Program. Her other interests include amateur Spanish filmmaking, dirtbiking, musical theatre, and grammar policing. Maddison spends her summers working at a family retreat centre located on Keats Island, BC, where she has been endorsed for “singing silly camp songs” and “being insufferably loud when necessary” on her LinkedIn profile.

- Andrew Wang – Andrew is a current Media Specialist with UBC Studios. Working with faculty from all over campus, he enjoys learning new concepts and ideas from them during studio and on-site film shoots. His future goal is to innovate and create more effective forms of teaching in higher education.
