I will walk you through how I used AI to transform selected syllabus elements to make them more engaging and interactive. I will also share some of the challenges I encountered and key takeaways that may help guide a more practical and effective application of AI in visual syllabus design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Design Challenges <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ETEC 510 syllabus, taught by Dr. Jamilee Baroud (Summer 2024), was used for this case study. Overall, the syllabus is well structured and provides essential course information in accordance with UBC syllabus requirements, including the course description, learning objectives, course schedule, assessments, and course policies. It also uses appropriate headings and formatting to support readability and navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it remains a traditional, static syllabus that relies primarily on text with limited visual elements. AI may take the design in a different direction than you originally envisioned, adding auto-generated text and images that do not always align with your course goals or instructor needs. Instead, take a segmented approach. First, critically review your syllabus and identify one or two sections that would benefit most from visual enhancement. Then, experiment with multiple AI tools and iterations to explore and refine different design options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this case study, I found that human review and modification were essential, regardless of which visual syllabus format was chosen. AI-generated designs required adjustments to ensure that the final products aligned with the course content, instructor needs, and intended student experience. Nevertheless, AI tools can significantly reduce the time and effort required for instructors to transform a traditional syllabus into a more effective and engaging format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another important consideration is about AI-generated text. I found that AI often adds new text or automatically paraphrases the source content, which can subtly change the original meaning or introduce assumptions. Even when prompted to use only the provided content, this instruction could be lost through multiple rounds of design iterations.
