Rare Books and Special Collections is hosting a workshop for graduate students on archival research skills on Friday Oct. 21 at noon-2 pm.  Designed for beginners, this workshop will cover the basics of archival research and organization, and finish with some hands-on examples from the collections at UBC Library. This workshop will be held in the Rare Books and Special Collections division of the library, Room 110 in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.

Please note that participants will be asked to leave their coats and bags in lockers when they arrive; notepads and pencils are provided, or feel free to bring a laptop.

This is a great opportunity for new grads, or those who have been to Rare Books and Special Collections or other archives in the past but would like a refresher.

A reminder that Rare Books and Special Collections, University Archives and the Chung Collection will be closed for the Easter long weekend (Friday April 22 through Monday April 25 inclusive). Also a reminder that last Saturday was our final open Saturday for the 2010-2011 academic year- our summer hours are in effect  after the long weekend (Monday to Friday, 9-5).

Good Friday procession, Vancouver 1914

The image above is from the B.C. Historical Photograph Collection and depicts a Good Friday procession from the St. James Anglican Church on Cordova Street in Vancouver in 1914. It is on the front side of a postcard, produced by Timms’s Photography. St. James was established in 1881, but burned down in the Great Fire of 1886. The current building, at 303 Cordova St.,  was designed by architect Adrian Scott and opened in 1936 (see The History of Metropolitan Vancouver- 1936).

Due to a special event, Rare Books and Special Collections will be closed to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010.

The Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia is now accepting applications for the 2006 Early-Modern Komonjo and Kuzushiji Workshop. The Workshop will take place July 16-August 12 on the UBC campus in Vancouver, Canada.

Historian Umezawa Fumiko of Keisen University will lead participants in a review of kanbun, hentaigana, and sorobun, before focusing on travel documents from the UBC Early-Modern Beans Map Collection. The Workshop is co-sponsored by UBC-Asian Studies with Stanford University , and co-directed by Joshua Mostow and Christina Laffin.

We welcome applications from graduate students, faculty members, educators, museum curators, and library professionals. In addition to room and board, the participation fee is CAD$500, with limited scholarship assistance likely available. The application deadline is March 15, 2006.
