About Me

I grew up in Victoria, BC and graduated from UVic with my BA with a major in English Literature and a minor in Environmental Studies. I then completed my PDPP with a focus in Elementary Education. As I had gone straight from highschool to university I chose to break the school chain and join the workforce outside of a school atmosphere. I worked in Aboriginal Law and Office Administration for a year and then travelled overseas, first to Thailand and Nepal and then through Europe. I moved back to the West Coast of BC and then decided to try my luck “down under”. Initially I worked in hospitality, but couldn’t shake my desire to teach so wound up being on the spare board in Sydney, New South Wales.

When I returned to Canada I was ready to teach and followed a friend up to Powell River, BC, where I have been for the last 2 years. I have been teaching Grade 5/6 since I arrived here and love the enthusiasm and quirkiness of this age range. As a typical Libra I try to keep a balance between technology and outdoor education, which are my two passions, or methods for encouraging participation. Students who don’t do well in a traditional classroom are often more successful when provided with an alternate (technological or outdoor) environment to show and engage with their learning.
