You survey your surroundings and try to collect your thoughts. Do you roll over and [[give up|Give Up]]? Or do you [[brush yourself off and go to explore|Explore]]? Now is the chance to dig deep. This is not the end of your story. You can do [[this!|Explore]]Wandering aimlessly, you attempt to orient yourself with the surroundings. The houses are in shambles. Nothing looks as it did only a few moments ago. You wander through your yard and toward the remains of the field and forest nearby. {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/4qjlqrvORWA', alt: 'trees'} You see a branch on the ground and [[pick it up|Stick]].Looking at the branch, you decide to fashion yourself a walking stick, as you'll need to explore your new surroundings -- and hopefully see if anyone else survived! You break the largest branch off, holding it up to your hip to make sure it’s [[just right.|hike]] Your new walking stick really helps as you keep exploring your new surroundings. {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/n3gTEw17Jyg', alt: 'walkingstick'} But the reality is starting to set in. This is … home? Flooded with emotions about the way things used to be, you’re brought back to reality with another [[rumbling noise.|rumbling noise]]It takes you a minute, but you realize that it’s your stomach! Of course you’re hungry! *Right.* Just because the world has pretty much ended doesn’t mean that you no longer have to eat! Your focus shifts from exploring the surroundings to dealing with your [[hunger.|hunger]]What are you going to do? You think back on your experience with food and try to figure out what will *ACTUALLY* work for you to be successful! [[Forage|Forage]] for greens and mushrooms. [[Hunt|Hunt]] for animals. [[Scavenge|Scavenge]] for pretty much anything you can find (you are starving ...)Forage! What an exciting concept! No need to worry, it’s all going to be okay! (Right?!?) Foraging is about searching for wild food resources such as [[plants|Plants]], [[berries|Berries]], [[nuts|Nuts]] and [[fungi.|Fungi]]. Doesn’t seem too bad actually. You look around and realize that not too far off in the distance there looks like [[a forest|Forest]].Right … hunting … you can do this! Lots of people used this as their only supply of meat. You look around and shift your focus to seeing what animals are still around. It’s pretty slim - there doesn’t appear to be much [[wildlife around anywhere.|wildlife]]You look around scanning for . . . for what? Until you see something out of the corner of your eye circling above - you look up and see that it’s just [[crows.|Crows]] You shake your stick at them and think, “should I try to throw it at them?” They are laughing at you. <audio src="https://etec565meg.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/1/1/131176863/194948__soundmary__crows-or-rooks1.mp3" autoplay> There are actually thousands of different types of plants you can eat! - Dandelions - Alfalfa - Forget-me-knots - Red Clover - Sunflowers - Cattails ... just to name a few! Just beware of pesticide spray (brown vegetation) and plants that may be poisonous as that stuff will [[kill you!|Forage]] {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/FLcjWjA9708', alt: 'dendelion'}Chances are you’ll be able to find some wild berry bushes out there somewhere! Think blackberries, raspberries, huckleberries, and salmon berries. Unfortunately, finding a grape vine to make wine is probably impossible. [[How sad.|Forage]] {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/7Uf3lEJZOAc', alt: 'berries'}Where there’s a squirrel, there’s a way! I mean nut, there’s definitely a nut somewhere packed with protein and fat. Look to the trees and ground to [[forage|Forage]] for acorns, walnuts, beechnuts, pecans and pine nuts! {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/9kHAdJoNRJc', alt: 'nuts'}Mushrooms. We’re talking about mushrooms, which yes, are a fungi. If it’s purple, looks like a steak, or is yellow and under a deciduous tree - you can eat it. Just be wary of those fairytale toadstool ones - they are not [[magic|Forage]] {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/fdeVkxtyymk', alt: 'mushrooms'}With your walking stick in hand, you come to the edge of the forest. Right away you see a squirrel! Knowing that nuts must be near you [[follow it.|Follow]]The squirrel must know what you’re up to, because it fits almost all the nuts it can into its mouth and scurries up a tree. {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/r_TzuObQYBQ', alt: 'squirrel'} You quickly search the ground for it’s [[leftovers.|Pick Up]] Success!!! You’ve found some walnuts! But wait. How do you crack it open? [[Use your stick|Sticks]] [[Find a rock|Rock]] You begin to play whack-a-walnut with your stick when you realize this [[is not working...|Rock]] <audio src="https://etec565meg.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/1/1/131176863/319216__worthahep88__stick-into-soft-dirt.wav" autoplay><<repeat 5s>>You find a rock close by and begin to hammer away at the walnut. After a few excellent hits, the walnut cracks open! Luckily your squirrel friend followed the rules of foraging and left enough for you to get a decent energy burst. What to do next? [[Keep going|Keep Going]] or [[take a nap|Nap]]With your spirits held high after a successful first forage, you continue walking through the forest when suddenly you hear cracks and snaps to your left! You quickly crouch down, holding your walking stick, preparing for the [[worst|Worst]] This WAS a good idea, until you realized that you’d be sleeping on the forest floor, which doesn’t look to comfy. [[*sigh*|Keep Going]] When out from behind the bush appears... [[a zombie|Zombie]] [[another human|Human]] [[your squirrel friend|Squirrel]]Wrong storyline! What kind of a game do you think this is? Luckily for you this is not [[Zombieland|Worst]]Amazing!! Another human being!! **Best. Day. Ever!!** Wait. What if they think I have something of value and want to fight me for it?!? Or, they want all the nuts for themselves and want to get rid of the competition?!? Or, what if they’re actually a decent person and happen to have “real food” on them they want to share?! You decide to: [[Run|Run]] [[Stay|Stay]]*Nope* Remember! Your squirrel friend is eating his foraging finds in the [[tree!|Worst]]Whelp. That didn't work. You tripped over a log as you were running away and when you looked back you noticed that the other human was waving their hands and yelling, *“It’s okay! I’m not going to harm you!”* Maybe you should have stayed [[after all.|Stay]]Turns out that this other human is not wanting anything you have but rather wants to share with you what they have! Success! I guess those nuts weren’t that filling in the end. But what do they have to share with you? *[[More nuts|More Nuts]] - ugh *[[Dandelions|Dandelions]] - intriguing *[[Mushrooms|Magic Mushrooms]] - that’s what I’m talking about! Luckily for you they were already cracked and just as you were about to eat a whole handful, you remembered something you heard about eating too many nuts - they make you gassy. [[Ew.|Stay]]Mushrooms are soooooooo good! They have amazing nutrients such as protein, fiber, vitamin B and [[selenium!|Selenium]] The other human gives you a handful and as you stuff them in your mouth, you notice they’re smiling a little too big and looking at you a little too weirdly. Am I [[going to die?|Die]]Thinking about the lack of wildlife reminds you that you know that you used to see the occasional deer, or moose - even a rabbit around. So maybe they were small enough to [[survive.|survive]] You look around watching and waiting - nothing. You have a lot of time to think. "I’d better sit tight and [[wait here|wait here]] and see if anything wanders by." You don’t want to spook anything by tromping through the bushes, so you sit patiently waiting… something will have to walk by. As your mind drifts you realize if you see something you have nothing to kill it with! Time to [[sharpen this stick.|sharpen]]You find a few sharp rocks on the ground and sit down to attempt to rough out a spear. Your first few strikes are tough - this is going to take a while … But persistence pays off aand you feel confident your spear [[may get your first kill|kill]] You’re thinking you should take some [[practice swings|practice]].Confidence at an all time high, you take your trusty spear and sit back down at your spot. Waiting... [[Waiting ...]] You etect an "X" on the bark of a tree and take aim. {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/dzq6iTasEjk', alt: 'target'} A few deep breaths ... you release the spear - **bullseye!!** Confidence at an all time high, you take your trusty spear and sit back down at your spot. Waiting … [[Waiting ...]]You hear something! Movement catches the corner of your eye ... is it [[big??|big]] Or is it [[small??|small]] It’s a deer! OK - keep it together -- you’ve got this!! You watch the deer as it enters the clearing. Another deer, but this one is a buck!!! What a score! Two of them! [[Now what?|Now what?]] It’s just a small brown hare. Too small a target for your spear. You decide to continue [[waiting...|Waiting2]] It’s time to make a choice! Do you [[spear the doe|Doe]] or [[spear the buck?|Buck]]Delicious dandelions. So good in teas, on top of salads, breaded and baked, you name it! {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/FLcjWjA9708', alt: 'dandelions'} But, you remembered something you read once that said consuming dandelions can cause diarrhea. [[Ew.|Stay]]Fun Fact! Your body relies on this important mineral for many of its basic functions, from reproduction to fighting infection. [[You kinda need this!|Magic Mushrooms]]**Woaaaaaaaaaaaah.** {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/1Qr5Lie0Ix0', alt: 'psychodelic'} Within a few minutes it seems as though all the living things in the forest have come to life. Hello, little leaves. Hello, giant human-sized squirrel. Hello, talking pine cones. *** [[Hello…|Hello]]Hello ... fairy with a flute. Hmm...this is interesting. The fairy talks back, “Hello Forager. Take some time and listen to sounds of flute, it seems as though you have been through some stressful events lately.” [[Sure, I can listen to a Fairy play some relaxing flute melodies.|Sure]] [[Hard no.|Back]] You stay with the Fairy and listen to the calming and joyous sounds of their flute. You feel much less stressed and say goodbye to your new friend heading back to look for that other [[human.|Back]]As you look around for that sneaky other human, you realize that they have left you to trip out all on your own. Feeling overwhelmed with sadness, you snuggle up to the giant human-sized squirrel and dig in until this is [[all over.|Over]]When the magic mushrooms finally wear off, you are tired, your body hurts, you’re hungry, but surprisingly, your mind feels right at ease. Huh. Wonder why that is? Anyways, you decide you need sustenance so you set off again searching for [[more food.|Food]] As you’re walking you find a couple huckleberry bushes and load up, but are careful not to eat too many because you don’t want a stomach ache. You also find some fiddleheads and indulge a bit before stuffing more into your pockets for later. Then, in the not too far distance, you see a small building. Maybe an outhouse [[or shed?|Shed2]]You keep walking and discover that it is indeed a small shed. You look around to see if that other human is near, but the coast looks clear. Do you race to [[open the shed,|Open Shed]] or [[keep on moving?|Keep Moving]]As you slam the door closed behind you you feel a giant wave of relief. You then turn around... Woah. Jackpot. The shed is practically empty except for some old newspapers, fertilizer, some seed packets, a sack, and rusty garden tools. Looks like this might be your new home. [[Congratulations!|Congratulations]] You pass on the shed, even though it looks promising, but the moment it’s out of sight a torrential downpour starts! Thunder! Lightning! {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/JG_HfydoNqY', alt: 'lightening'} Where did this storm come from?!? [[Yes|Yes]] [[No|No]] Credits: - Unsplash.com: images - freesound.org: audio - Rebecca Hydamaka: drawingsAmazing! Deciding what food we choose to put into our bodies is not only a decision we make everyday, but is something that we could work to be more conscious of. Regardless of the choices you make, we need to make sure we are thinking of the **ethical, environmental and moral implications** of our choices. There are people in our world today, who do not have the option to make these considerations. Think about this the next time you decide to eat. Way to go! <audio src="https://etec565meg.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/1/1/131176863/applause3.wav" autoplay>Take a moment to think about why that is? What are you unhappy about and how are you going to change that? Do you want to [[try again?|Start]] You have sworn you heard them say, “heheheheheh - just call us a ‘murder' bahahahah”. Suddenly you watch them dive toward a nest on the edge of a [[pond.|Pond]] {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/mn-G7XenzY8', alt: 'pond'}You see snails at the edge ... escargot ... appetizers ... Or duck eggs? Either way it will be raw. [[Eat|Eat]] [[Don’t eat|Don’t Eat]] ... You can’t believe you ate that. Yuk that was gross. So thirsty . .. need to wash down the slime. [[Drink the pond water?|Drink]] You spot some bullrushes and remember some things about roots and that they are edible. Those might be better... [[Try them?|Try Them]] [[Walk away?|Walk Away]]Not too bad actually. You keep eating and picking away until you feel something weird in your mouth. You reach in with your fingers and pull out ... a worm! **GROSS!!** Apparently worms like to live in bullrushes. You begin feeling [[really, **REALLY ill…**|Vomit Scene]]You start to walk away and hear the sound of a gurgling stream. Yay! You drop down on your knees to pray! Nope ... you are slurping down delicious, cool water and...[[**bugs!!**|Ugh]]Okay now you have either salmonella or beaver fever or something - way to go! And you grossed yourself out - even that person over there seems to be judg.... WHAT??!!!??? Panicing, you immediately [[hide behind a tree|Tree]] because they could be an axe murder. You yell [[for help?|Help Me]] and run away because they may not know you're there. .. okay this might not be so bad ... protein? Maybe this is a good idea. You look around and notice a [[log.|Log]]Ya right, you are fooling no one - [[They know|They Know]] and could hear you wretching from a mile away. [[Nutritious and delicious!|Vomit Scene]] Ya right, [[no freaking way!|Out]] Yep - they know you're there. They hand you a bundle of leaves - mmmmm minty fresh! "Your breath is disgusting. They ask what you ate and you show them the bounty from around the pond - sharing your precious food. They hand you a bundle of matches and the advice: cook your food and boil your water. They walk away disappearing into the mist. Overwhelmed, you lay down for a short [[nap.|Out]] What a sweet axe murderer - ummm... person. *Yawn.* All that barfing was exhausting. You lay down for just a little nap and are quickly [[out cold.|Out]] You wake up from a refreshing nap and continue your journey. You rub your eyes and see something in the distance. Is that an [[old dilapidated shed?|Shed]] What do you do? {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/RsA2AtZ-xbw', alt: 'cabin'} [[Go in|Go In]] or think [[hell no|Hell no]] ... that is where they hid the bodies. You scan the inside of the shed. You notice an empty sack of fertilizer, some crumpled seed packets, and rusty garden tools. Looks like you hit the jackpot! [[Congratulations!|Congratulations]]You wander through the bush and fallen trees, looking for more animals and any other supplies. You stop to scarf down a mushroom - you are starving by now, when suddenly you hear a rustling in the bushes, stopping you in your tracks. [[What is it?|What]]Really? You’re going to limit the food supply even more so than it already is! Wait. You see some fawns pop out behind the Doe! So, do you still [[spear the doe|Doe2]] or do you opt for [[the buck?|Buck]]Great choice! It’s a 4 point buck (that means it’s got 4 tips on one side of it’s antlers) which is awesome! {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos//jpwkvEXtdnA', alt: 'buck'} Now to make the throw. Chances are you’re only going to injure it but hey! What do you have to lose?! You focus in, take your aim, and [[unleash the spear...|Spear]] You draw your spear and look at the doe and fawn. You hesitate, as you're not sure that you can do it. {embed Unsplash image: 'https://unsplash.com/photos/tnzZxrla7S8', alt: 'doe'} Hesitating for just another second, the doe and fawn run into the bush, but the buck stays behind. Well, [[buck it is!|Buck]]It’s a hit! The buck doesn’t go down right away, but you’ve definitely injured it. The spear is stuck in it’s side right by the ribs! As the doe and fawns disperse, you see the buck fall to the ground just at the edge of the forest. Do you [[race over|Race Over]] or do you [[sit and wait,|Sit Wait]] basking in the glory of your first kill? You’ve never ran so fast in your life! You get to where you saw the buck go down and...it’s not there. *What?!* But you could have sworn this is where it dropped! Were you imagining things? Did the buck move when you were doing your happy dance? You decide to go [[search for it.|Find It]]Good idea! Did you know that oftentimes when you’re hunting big game that they’ll travel a distance and then bed down before they die? Sometimes if you go after them too soon, you'll scare them further away!! After about 30 minutes, you haven’t seen any movement, so you [[walk on over.|Walk Over]]After a few hours you finally find the buck. Being more cautious this time, you throw a couple nearby rocks at it to make sure it’s actually dead. It is. *But now what?* How on earth are you going to skin it, cut it up, and cook it?! This is [[too hard!!|Too Hard]] Making sure to be extra cautious, you throw a couple nearby rocks at it to make sure it’s actually dead. It is. But now what? How on earth are you going to skin it, cut it up, and cook it?! This is [[too hard!!|Too Hard]]Just as you were about to give up, you hear a voice from behind you say, “I can help with that.” Startled, you jump up, turn around, and realize that it’s another human being!! Startled, you stay and listen to what [[they say.|Listen]] Freaked out, you grab the spear out of the buck and [[throw it at them!|Throw It]]“Congrats on the buck! I can’t believe you did that with a spear!” Shyly you respond, “Thanks,” still unsure of this person’s M.O. “Before all this happened, I used to be an avid hunter!” At this, all you can think of is how lucky you are to have met this person! [[What a gift!|Gift]]Well that didn’t go as planned. The other human caught the spear in their bare hand! What the heck?! “That’s okay. I’m just here to help,” they say. You think to yourself, [[what a gift this is!|Gift]]This other human being happened to be carving a turkey when this whole thing went down so they had a knife. (That’s lucky!) They teach you how to skin the buck, carve the sections out, and start a fire. [[How generous!|Generous]]As you’re sitting by the fire, you look into the distance and notice an old shed. You suggest to your new friend that this could be a good place to keep the meat. They agree, and you both lug the meat [[towards it.|Towards It]] Suddenly it starts to pour rain. It’s like the snake is multiplying... There’s 1 ... then 2 ... then a ladder ... then 3 ... then a rabbit hole ... Woah ... [[What’s happening?|Rabbit Hole]]... you wake up, groggy and think, *"I have to lay off the mushrooms ..."* You give your head a shake and try to focus back on the search for food. You look up you see ... [[an old shack!|Shack]]
