Hi again!
Following Mercedes advice, I thought it was about time to make an introduction post. So the basics: My name is Rebecca, I’m from a small town in Alberta, and I’m in my third year here at UBC- first year GRS student. I took a year off after high school and went to Nepal for 5 months. It was here that I figure out (kind of) what I wanted to do with my life. I volunteered at a nutritional rehabilitation home (NRH) as well as at an elementary school teaching english. I also took a month to travel and do the trek to Everest base camp. One of the things that stuck with me most was seeing the workshops put on at the NRH and seeing how empowered the women were by learning simple skills such as how to cook vegetables properly and make incense.
From this experience, I thought that I wanted to come to UBC to take FNH and become a dietician. After my first semester I realized that it was not the right program for me and spoke with Roxana. I decided then that I wanted to be a GRS student, and I’m finally here. My interest lies in sustainable agriculture and indigenous people. I am much more interested in how farming relates to rural people in developing countries than the science behind soils, plants ect. It’s been quite difficult for me to continue taking science based courses, and I am very excited to get some hands on experience and engage with the community. It’s taken me a while to find my niche here at UBC, but I think I am finally on my way.
