Semester 2 Update: Go Global!

Hi friends!

Seeing as this semester is flying by, I thought I’d better get stated on my blog posts before the semester ends. Excitingly, I got excepted into the Go Global program! I will be spending a year in Australia at the University of New South Wales. This was my first choice and I am beyond excited to go to this wonderful uni and spend a year in the sun. Australia has the wolds oldest soils – call me a dork but this is super cool because our North American soil are some of the newest. I can’t wait to travel inland to the desert and see the red soil and Eyers Rock, the second reason why I chose this country. I’m trying to integrate Indigenous studies into my field, and Australia’s indigenous history is one that has fascinated me since I first started learning about it.

I’m really hoping that the process is simple from here on out. I have heard horror stories from students about transfer credits and visas and delays and all sorts of nightmares. Fingers crossed that does not happen to me!

Coincidentally, my boyfriend is conveniently from Sydney, so we will be flying back together.  I’m very excited to go to a new place, as I have not indulged my little travel bug for quite some time now. Although I love Vancouver, I have been feeling restless for the past year, and feel that this trip is coming at the perfect time. We’ve booked our flights for June 11th  and have a 7 day stop over in Hawaii, which  I could not be more thrilled about. I have never been to a tropical island and I’m looking forward to a much needed vacation. I can;t wait to go snorkelling and surfing and see the whole island. We are staying at Wikikki beach on Oahu island. We plan to rent a car and drive around the whole island, as the opposite side is supposed to have some pretty awesome beaches too. I cannot wait! Taking 5 classes (6 with GRS) and working up to 4 days a week has left me a bit of a nutcase to say the least. I’m really hoping that by only taking a few classes in Australia that I really love, I will rekindle my love for education. At the moment, I’m extremely frustrated and fed up with the education system. I’m feeling a huge lack of motivation and just general not caring. Which I know is not a good sign. My friend calls it senioritis haha. I think a lot of 3rd and 4th year students are going through the same thing…. it seems like everyone I talk to is fed up! However, whenever I go to GRS class (which is less often than I should. Goal for my final semster at UBC- go to ALL GRS classes!!), I feel uplifted and am so incredibly thankful I am in this program with such amazing people and inspiring advisors. Roxana- I think we all agree when I say you’re an angel. So thank y’all for that!

Until  next time-

Rebecca
