Thoughts on teaching, learning, and transitioning into the professional world of pedagogy.

Author Specs

I’m a Sessional Lecturer, Instructional Skills Workshop Facilitator, and recent M.Sc. Graduate at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. This blog began during the final year of my M.Sc. degree as a place to document my experiences with “research, writing, teaching, and (eventually) graduating”. You can check out my inaugural post to get a better idea of the frame of mind under which this blog began, but the short version is that I wrestled my way through a 3-year love triangle with research and pedagogy. Review my aforementioned credentials to see which passion won out.

I completed my undergraduate degree at University of Guelph in Environmental Science – and routinely oscillate between feeling like a true friend of the earth and feeling like the “worst Enviro Sci ever” (which was a self-inflicted title as I became known to my undergraduate peers as the person who’s never been camping – since rectified). I believe that feeling like the “worst Enviro Sci ever” is occasionally a healthy state of mind for any environmentalist as it keeps us striving to be better for the earth. Now, teaching a course titled Introduction to Environmental Sciences at The University of British Columbia, I am truly enjoying re-connecting with environmental issues and initiatives that I am passionate about.

As both a participant and a facilitator, some of the most exhilarating experiences I have had have been those with the Instructional Skills Workshop. For anyone looking to develop their teaching skills, public speaking skills, and/or general communication skills, ask me about it or take a look for yourself at the ISW Network website.

Although the title of my blog will eventually have to undergo a more drastic change, the formerly-titled “M.Sc. Reflections” blog is slightly retooled to reflect my recent transition from a student to a professional at UBC. My intentions are to blog about my life in the world of pedagogy, but I’m sure blog posts about my life in the world of my life will creep in as well.
