The possible effects shown in the map were found with an estimation of a wave affecting areas which are both 15m in elevation or lower, and within 1 Km of the shoreline. Given these parameters, 15.5% (2,030.2 Hectares) of Metro Vancouver’s total area would be affected by a possible tsunami. To estimate this impact, I created a summary table from layers containing the area impacted, and land use data clipped to fit that area. The summary table revealed how much area of each category was affected as well as the total area affected (upon inspection with the summarization function). The total area of Metro Vancouver was given by the original summary table for the area and land use data. These values yielded the percentage of area affected.

Within the danger zone, there are various healthcare and educational facilities which could be impacted by a wave. The list is as follows:

  • St. Anthony of Padua
  • Ecole Rose Des Vents
  • Heritage 3R’s School
  • False Creek Elementary
  • Coast West Community Home
  • Broadway Pentecostal Lodge
  • Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design
  • Henry Hudson Elementary
  • Yaletown House Society
  • St. John’s International
  • Villa Cathay Care Home
  • St. Francis Xavier
  • Institute of Indigenous Government

These locations were found by creating a combined layer from the ‘education’ data and ‘healthcare’ data. With this combined layer, I used the ‘intersect’ tool to create a new layer from the ‘education/healthcare’, and ‘danger zone’ layers. The attribute table from this second new layer revealed which facilities were at risk. The information from this map can be used to prepare for a possible tsunami. Signage in at-risk areas can be posted, facilities can develop safety plans, preventative measures can be implemented, and much more.
