Abstract

Ski-mountaineering is a popular activity which has been gaining increasing interest in the last ten years (Meyer, 2020). This year, in particular, as the Covid-19 pandemic has led to people wanting to remove themselves from crowds, the backcountry has become even more appealing. Thus, understanding the avalanche risk associated with these activities is essential to ensure people are better prepared when entering high-risk terrain. This project aims to illustrate the avalanche risk on three popular ski-mountaineering descents in British Columbia: The Spearhead Traverse, Mt. Currie Couloirs, and Joffre Peak Couloirs. We will be performing a Multi-Criteria Analysis, focusing on slope angle, elevation, slope aspect and wind speed and producing final maps for each descent.
