Peer Network Intro

I looked at using a couple of tools for storytelling, especially tools that I was already familiar with such as Pixton and Animoto but in the end decided to go with Sparkol.  Not only was Sparkol easy to use, but I really like the feel of the simplicity of the graphics.  I have seen VideoScribe before and was attracted to the clean lines.   Electronic Medical Records (EMR) can be an overwhelming application to learn and didn’t want to convey that the Peer Network program is complicated or busy and I think Sparkol has the clean and simple look that I want to project to the audience.  From a pedagogical perspective, having a tool that is able to present a simple story is important because our learners are busy, balancing work, life and learning all at the same time.  Adult learners don’t have time and having a story with a busy screen would not be appealing for them to sit through.  Our learners want to take time watching something if it is relevant to their job and Sparkol provides a simple way for me to convey the message about our Peer Network.  I want the learners to feel that the Peer Network is as simple to contact as the presentation.

This introductory video would be posted on the Peer Network page to give learners an idea of what we can help them with.  Although they are told by many people about what we do, it seems like people are still not aware of us.  The problem is that there are so many groups of people during the EMR implementation process that learners forget or confuse us with other people in the process.  We are also often confused with Doctor’s Nova Scotia and what they offer so they contact them rather than us.  Another option for using this video is to show the learners during an application demonstration, even before the implementation process or during training to transition into the Peer Network.  I did think of doing the voice over option but decided against it since most people would view this video during their work hours and in a busy clinic, it would be difficult to hear.

I found Sparkol really easy to use and the graphics, limited but enough for me to use for this project.  There were also YouTube video links on the site compiled by the creators to get the basics, but not necessary.  I tried the 7 day free version and downloaded the software as well, which was easy.  Although I had to download the software, it still required me to be connected to their site online so that was a little extra step.

I chose to upload this on YouTube and set as unlisted due to potential issues with government policies.  At the moment, it does comply with policies but the social media policy is being reviewed and I can easily delete it if necessary.
