{"id":243,"date":"2014-06-28T16:45:06","date_gmt":"2014-06-28T23:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/educ500\/?p=243"},"modified":"2014-06-28T16:45:06","modified_gmt":"2014-06-28T23:45:06","slug":"science-2-0-analytics-predict-risk-of-metabolic-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/researchmethods\/2014\/06\/28\/science-2-0-analytics-predict-risk-of-metabolic-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Science 2.0: Analytics predict risk of metabolic syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #494949\">News Staff, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science20.com\/news_articles\/science_20_analytics_can_predict_risk_of_metabolic_syndrome-139503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science20.com<\/a>, June 27, 2014&#8211; Obviously, as the creators of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #3d4a89\" href=\"http:\/\/www.science20.com\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the four pillars of the Science 2.0 concept<\/a><span style=\"color: #494949\">, we&#8217;re interested in new ways to use data to make meaningful decisions, but we recognize that key breakthroughs are more likely to happen in the private sector, where money can be made filling a demand.<\/span><br style=\"color: #494949\" \/><br style=\"color: #494949\" \/><span style=\"color: #494949\">A paper by\u00a0Aetna and GNS Healthcare Inc.\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #3d4a89\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ajmc.com\/publications\/issue\/2014\/2014-vol20-n6\/Novel-Predictive-Models-for-Metabolic-Syndrome-Risk-A-Big-Data-Analytic-Approach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in\u00a0the\u00a0<em>American Journal of Managed Care<\/em><\/a><span style=\"color: #494949\">\u00a0demonstrates how analysis of patient records using analytics can predict future risk of metabolic syndrome.<\/span><br style=\"color: #494949\" \/><br style=\"color: #494949\" \/><span style=\"color: #494949\">This could be useful, not just because a third of the population has the somewhat fuzzily-defined metabolic syndrome,\u00a0a condition that can lead to a condition like chronic heart disease, stroke and diabetes, or because obesity accounts for almost 20 percent of overall health care costs in the U.S., but because it&#8217;s a roadmap for how to port the Science 2.0 approach to lots of fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #494949\">&#8220;This study demonstrates how integration of multiple sources of patient data can help predict patient-specific medical problems,&#8221; said lead author Dr. Gregory Steinberg, head of clinical innovation at Aetna Innovation Labs. &#8220;We believe the personalized clinical outreach and engagement strategies, informed by data from this study, can help improve the health of people with metabolic syndrome and reduce the associated costs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #494949\">&#8220;The breakthrough in this study is that we are able to bring to light hyper-individualized patient predictions, including quantitatively identifying which individual patients are most at risk, which syndrome factors are most likely to push that patient past a threshold, and which interventions will have the greatest impact on that individual,&#8221; said Colin Hill, co-founder and CEO of GNS. &#8220;The GNS automated data analytics platform paired with Aetna&#8217;s deep clinical expertise produced these results on extremely large datasets in just three months, a testament to the ability of both groups.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #494949\">GNS analyzed data from nearly 37,000 members of one of Aetna&#8217;s employer customers who had voluntarily participated in screening for metabolic syndrome.
