After spending a semester with Tamar, I found that marketing is actually more strategic than I originally thought. Before taking this course, I shared the same foolish belief as my friends: In marketing, you would just make advertisements all day, paint posters, make Facebook ads, do some television commercials… Looking back now, I now see how uninformed we were. Marketing is not only about advertising, it is about also about supply chain, strategy, positioning, psychology. Everything we see around us has had the influence of Marketing: cars, houses, the coffee on your table…’

The knowledge I have gained through this course will definitely help me in the future.

As the final post of this course, I will post a video not related to marketing. I want you, the reader to get a good laugh watching this, as a way to thank you for all your hard work.
On YouTube, search “CK Louis” and watch one of his video, although I must warn, his uses very strong language in his videos– I guess you can say that is how he markets and brands himself.

Enjoy! Because I sure did =)

Wow, Amber’s blog was an eye opening. In her recent posts, many creative advertisements and marketing campaigns were featured, namely “Bored Panda”. The MacBook Pro magazine as was especially eye catching.

This reminds me an another advertisement I came across on Youtube. Ever seen an advertisement that interacts with it’s viewers.. physically? The Skittles campaign is one of most creative I have seen in a long time.

Have a look yourself!

Marketing Contingencies

A recovering global economy coupled with a natural disaster is not a good mix. Especially for those in marketing.

When every company is cutting costs, how can marketing strategist deal with it?

“There are four areas of consideration:
1) what are the standards of success in a down market
2) which products should be supported by marketing when budgets are tight;
3) which messages will resonate; and
4) which media will provide the biggest bang for the buck?”

Personally, I think these areas for considering should be used regardless of the company and economical conditions.
This insightful Forbes article examines the psychology of consumers during a recession. The ideas outlined in this article are both practical and realistic.

Do you think that with online shopping, location doesn’t matter? After all, it’s all online, why would there be a difference?

Well…you’re wrong.

The difference in costs are attributable to these factors: Shipping time, Shipping costs, and State tax. Delaware seems to be the best place to live if you are a regular online shopping: “Not only do Delawareans avoid paying sales tax on every online order, they have some of the lowest shipping costs and fastest shipping times.”

It seems the location of the distribution centers is the main cause. If it is very close, then shipping time and shipping costs would decrease. With this in mind, can you guess which area is the worst for online shopping?

If you guessed Hawaii, you’re right on. All shipment must be made by either air (expensive) or sea (long wait time); but on top of that, Hawaii has a high state tax, which inflates the costs of all items.

Subliminal Advertising

Posted by: | March 10, 2011 | Leave a Comment

Last week, as I was browsing for interesting forms of advertising,
I came across the name Derren Brown–I found out he’s a well
known television performer famous for his abilities to manipulate minds,
even marketing experts.

This leads me to wonder, out of all campaigns, subliminal marketing
has to be the most effective.
I do know that subliminal marketing is illegal, but there are marketing
strategies out there that continue to take advantage of this.
!

Here is a video I found quite interesting, and I highly recommend it:
Derren Brown

So, did you Like This post?
If subliminal messaging really works, then you should, because I spent quite some time positioning the first words of each line.

Years ago, when Apple first launched the Macintosh, it was a failure– Microsoft eventually became the majority market share holder even though Apple was the pioneer for personal computer systems. In today’s date, Apple’s success with the iPhone is once again detracting because of competition, namely Google’s Android phone, HTC and other smart phone companies.

It seems Apple’s initial success is always short lived due to the well established competition in the market copying it’s products: iPod Vs. the Zune, iPhone Vs. Android Smart phone, Mac Vs. PC.. With Apple’s new iPad 2, perhaps we’ll be seeing some similar products from Microsoft or Google. I guess only time will well.
This article from Forbes examines the case further

Have you ever shopped at Costco? How long did it take you?
Every time I go to Costco, I would budget at least 1 hours for it–This is not because of the scarce parking spaces or the freakishly long lineups, but it’s because somehow, they seem to have me wandering in there for longer than I expected.
This article examines the psychology behind Costco, and other warehouses known for bulk purchases.

CEO, CFO, COO…how about CMO?

This video from Forbes explains why Marketing is such a critical step in all businesses. For me, this was the first time I heard someone mention CMO. The speaker in this video makes an excellent point on the difference between a sales person and a marketing strategist.

Psychology: Impulse Control

“Ever made a one-cookie-a-day rule, then wolfed down an entire package?…You may have fallen prey to a common resolution-killer: overestimating your own impulse control.”– Psychology Today

This articles examines why we make impulse purchase decisions. It seems that all of use are overestimating our self control abilities. If you are on a strict diet, don’t even have junk food in your kitchen– or you will ultimately lose self control and devour the whole bag of chips.

PS3 Commercial

This might be the most disturbing gaming console advertisement I have ever seen. After reading pages of comments on Youtube, and pressing the replay button several more times, I still could not figure objective or purpose of this commercial.
The one thing the fills my mind when watching this commercial is, “Wow, this is a little scary.” Perhaps the main goal of this commercial was to spark controversy and debate among the public.
