So I thought I would talk about the Garag…… wait a minute they changed it to Rogers Arena. Over the summer Canuck’s sports and entertainment group decided, along with GM, that they were ending their sponsorship deal for the name of the building. This is quite the change for the city as this name “GM place or the Garage” has been associated with this building for some time now (i’m still getting over it :()

Along with the change in name, there is also a telecommunications aspect to the 10 year contract that was signed between the two parties. From a MARKETING standpoint, this new relationship with Roger’s communication will provide a tremendous benefit for the team now and in the future.

There are plans to have Canucks games be broadcasted on Blackberry’s, along with Rogers taking over broadcasting all of their games on television (they do the bulk of them already now). This relationship could be revolutionary for the organization as Rogers is the leading telecommunications company in Canada and understand the sports business (being affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays).

This use of technology to promote the team by, for instance, showing games on Blackberry’s would be the first of its kind in the NHL. With the increasing demand for constantly having current information, this new agreement could put the Canucks at the forefront of the NHL and perhaps many other professional sports teams. There are also talks that Rogers could bid for their radio broadcast rights as well. I believe it would be very beneficial for the team to have one of the largest communications company managing and promoting the team in new ways.
