Will Sidney Be In Russia?
NHL participation in the Olympics has been a hot topic among NHL players and the league, not to mention among fans. In the summer Bob Mackenzie of TSN wrote a blog about this subject as it was being talked about, among other things, during the World Hockey Summit.
The players are viewed as an asset to the owners, and many of them don’t want to risk injury or or something happening to these assets. The Olympics in Vancouver were largely viewed as favourable because they helped to market both the game and the players to a worldwide audience. Team USA, for instance, may help promote and gain excitement in industries that are floundering (Phoenix). The NHL desire for world expansion has been made a priority over the years by, for example, holding exhibition games overseas. The Vancouver games allowed North America to watch the game and be caught up in the excitment.
One of the big issues with the 2014 games in Sochi is that almost all of the games would be scheduled in the middle of the night for North Americans and many other countries. This is seen as a problem for owners as it will vastly decrease the viewers it will get. Bob Mackenzie is under the impression that the NHL probably won’t be supporting these games. I think that they probably will because it could be used to promote Russian born homegrown stars such as Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin.
Marketing the game has been a big issue in North America as it seems it always comes in 4th among professional sports leagues. The NHL has targeted an untapped market overseas which it wants to gain entry into, and I think that allowing NHL participation in Sochi will be the perfect compliment to this plan
