Assessment

Hi all:

I wanted to get this task out of the way as the last week of school is going to be crazy for me (changing schools, year end activities, wedding anniversary, Canada Day (woot) ).

I think this link would provide quick access to my assessment.

Overall, I found this to be a benefical exercise. While I originally played around with wiki’s and Hot Potato, is was good to see the tools that are embedded inside of Moodle for assessment and evaluation. I came to notice that many of those type of activities that I do in the classroom, could be completed here within Moodle. I tried to match the language of the questions to the learning pathways we have at our school. This was easily done in the the essay questions, but became more restrictive when moving to the short answer and multiple choice questions.

In terms of prep time, this took much longer than I expected. I do understand that this was my first attempt at composing such a tool, yet I know it would have taken 1/4 the time to do this in Word for hand-out in class. I also noticed there was a very direct correlation between the amount of energy/responses you desired from students to the time it took to develop the associated questions. For example, setting up automatic comments for students based on their selection in a multiple choice question was tedious – but I see the purpose of giving instant feedback. As well, the grade boundaries and comments took time, but would surely save time if I were to do that by hand.

On a side note, I am unsure if there is much of a difference between a multiple choice question and a matching question. All I noticed is that the radial check off just becomes a drop down menu. I struggled to see the difference other than the ability to provide specific feedback in the multiple choice question based on the selection by the student.

In the end, I did appreciate the experience. This is exactly what I was hoping to work through when I we started to build our own Moodle site. I look forward to using this assessment tool as part of my overall content.

Cheers,
RM
