Hi there! My name is Rose Mary and I am passionate about teaching music.
I am a 2016 Secondary Music teacher candidate at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and just graduated in August. Hurray!
Having grown up in Singapore, Australia and then finally moving to Vancouver, I was able to experience life in different areas of the world as well as travelling to many others. My primary and secondary education were completed in Singapore, and afterward I moved to Melbourne, Australia where I graduated from the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music, majoring in piano performance.I then relocated to Vancouver, B.C. in Canada where I studied for my Bachelor of Education, Music Secondary program at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

I love being able to inspire people in music so I began to teach piano and music theory while I was completing my music degree in Australia. I have not stopped teaching since then, and now have several years’ experience in teaching piano to students of all ages. I discovered that I absolutely love helping children enjoy, discover and make music. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on my practicum during my program at UBC. There was a great deal to learn and I loved being able to help my students. The best feeling is when a student comes and asks about something, and you say, “Yes! I can help!” As a teacher, I want to be asked. I want to help the students improve. I’m estatic when they succeed and especially happy when I know I was able to be a part of that process.
In addition to my practicum placement at the secondary school, I also chose to teach in an elementary school for my community field experience so I would be able to experience interacting with younger children in large group settings. While I was there I was also in charge of PE and Art lessons. It was an amazing and incredible learning experience. I learned different things in two surprisingly different settings, and yet I can apply what I have learned from those teaching opportunities to both kinds of environments.
I believe that children’s lives are shaped through the education they receive. All students can learn. It is just a matter of how much the teacher is willing to do for their students. I have made a commitment to working as hard and spending as much time as necessary in order to make students successful, not just academically, but also socially and emotionally. My goal is to nurture the individual talents of each student, and to provide the skills and tools necessary for them to succeed in life. I want to help them be the very best that they can be. Learning is a lifelong journey. I do my best to learn and collaborate with other teachers by taking courses or attending conferences such as the BCMEA annual conference in order to constantly improve myself.
I have recently been employed as a music teacher for a maternity leave position at Delta Christian School beginning in October 2016. I am incredibly excited about this opportunity and am looking forward to my journey ahead as a teacher!
