{"id":664,"date":"2007-05-28T16:00:02","date_gmt":"2007-05-29T00:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/migrator.rab.olt.ubc.ca\/ross\/2007\/05\/28\/top-teacher-shown-the-door-after-showing-%e2%80%9cbaghdad-er%e2%80%9d\/"},"modified":"2007-05-28T16:00:02","modified_gmt":"2007-05-29T00:00:02","slug":"top-teacher-shown-the-door-after-showing-%e2%80%9cbaghdad-er%e2%80%9d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ross\/2007\/05\/top-teacher-shown-the-door-after-showing-%e2%80%9cbaghdad-er%e2%80%9d\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Teacher Shown the Door After Showing \u201cBaghdad ER\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"P1010337_2.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ross\/files\/2009\/02\/p1010337_2.jpg\" width=\"415\" height=\"445\">In an outrageous attack on the academic freedom of a progressive high school teacher, Michael Baker, a long-time social studies teacher at Lincoln (Nebraska) East High, was fired from his job earlier this month for showing the Emmy award winning documentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbo.com\/docs\/programs\/baghdader\/index.html\">Baghdad ER<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Baker is one of fewer than 50 teachers in the state of Nebraska with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbpts.org\/\">National Board for Professional Teaching Standards<\/a> certification. NBPTS certification is voluntary and an indication that Baker has meet the highest level of the teacher profession in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Baker cannot talk freely about what happened because he reached an agreement with the school district. Part of that agreement prohibits him from saying anything \u201cdisparaging\u201d about it, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Baker hosts the radio program &#8220;Room 101,&#8221; an interview\/call-in show that focuses on progressive education issues.
