{"id":71,"date":"2005-06-22T08:40:20","date_gmt":"2005-06-22T16:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/migrator.rab.olt.ubc.ca\/ross\/2005\/06\/22\/lars\/"},"modified":"2005-06-22T08:40:20","modified_gmt":"2005-06-22T16:40:20","slug":"lars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ross\/2005\/06\/lars\/","title":{"rendered":"LARS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"dylan_wilson_200.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/careo.elearning.ubc.ca\/weblogs\/ross\/archives\/dylan_wilson_200.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"304\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p>I thought if anybody could write an entire book about one song and make it interesting it would be Griel Marcus &#8230; and he has.<\/p>\n<p><i>Like a Rolling Stone: Bob Dylan at the Crossroads<\/i> treats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/news\/story\/_\/id\/6595846\/sort\/rank?pageid=rs.RS500&amp;pageregion=blob&amp;rnd=1117944052898&amp;has-player=true\">the number one song of all time according to <i>Rolling Stone<\/i> magazine<\/a> as a sonic event, ushered in by the mother of all drum cracks.<\/p>\n<p>[Note: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/story\/arts\/national\/2004\/12\/24\/Arts\/zep041224.html\">CBC says &#8220;Stairway to Heaven&#8221;<\/a> is the number one rock song of all time, oh well &#8230; <i>Mojo<\/i> magazine didn&#8217;t even list LARS among its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockandrollreport.com\/the_rock_and_roll_report\/2004\/11\/for_what_its_wo.html\">top 100 protest songs of all time<\/a>, although Dylan&#8217;s &#8220;Masters of War&#8221; did top the list.]<\/p>\n<p>Unlike most of his previous work, Marcus is not so much in his cultural critique mode as in his nostolgic fan mode. He doesn&#8217;t dwell on an analysis of <a href=\"http:\/\/bobdylan.com\/songs\/rolling.html\">the lyrics<\/a> or the cultural impact of the song. Instead, this book is about sound and feeling; not unlike Chuck Klosterman&#8217;s ode to 80s glam\/hair metal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tdotjay.com\/archives2\/2005\/02\/fargo_rock_city.html\"><i>Fargo Rock City<\/i><\/a>, if not as funny as Klosterman&#8217;s memior.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way Marcus:<\/p>\n<ul>treats us to some fabulous insights from Al Kooper, who wormed his way into organ seat for the recording of LARS;<\/p>\n<p>provides a sympathetic view of Mike Bloomfield, the unofficial band leader for the recording, and his rapid decline as one his generation&#8217;s most talented musicians;<\/p>\n<p>tells us that David Hendernson, author of <i>Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child of the Aquarian Age<\/i> has done the best writing on the subject of LARS;<\/p>\n<p>illustrates the importance of producers Tom Wilson (LARS) and Bob Johnston (everything else on <i>Highway 61 Revisited<\/i>);<\/p>\n<p>digresses on the relationship between LARS and the Pet Shop Boys&#8217; &#8220;Go West&#8221;&#8216;;<\/p>\n<p>draws a line connecting <a href=\"http:\/\/bobdylan.com\/songs\/desolation.html\">&#8220;Desolation Row&#8221;<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emory.edu\/INTELNET\/rus_thought_overview.html\">Vasily Rozanov<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nothingness.org\/SI\/vaneigem.html\">Raoul Vaneigem<\/a>;<\/p>\n<p>and emphatically states that &#8220;Let it Bleed&#8221; and &#8220;Highway 61 Revisited&#8221; are the two best albums ever made.<\/ul>\n<p>The book&#8217;s epilogue contains a transcript of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=4585682\">rehearal takes for LARS<\/a> and, as usual for a Marcus book, the notes are as interesting to read as the main text (at least for me).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I thought if anybody could write an entire book about one song and make it interesting it would be Griel Marcus &#8230; and he has.
