Добро пожаловать! Welcome to Russian 201, an Intermediate level of the Russian Language Program in the Department of CENES at the UBC! This 3-credit course uses an interactive approach with emphasis on students’ self-expression and conversation in everyday situations.

What We’ll Learn
- to apply and expand language skills learned in RUSS 100 or 102 to everyday situations and topics, such as holidays, discussing likes and dislikes, the weather and the Russian view of nature, travel, food, marriage, and family plans;
- to maintain dialogues in short social exchanges;
- to use in writing and in speech Russian nouns, pronouns, and adjectives in all cases;
- to use present, past and future tenses of verbs, Perfective and Inperfective aspects;
- to recognize and use approximately 1,000 -1,200 Russian words in conversation and/or composition;
- to apply techniques to improve pronunciation and conversational fluency.

Attendance and Participation (10%)
According to the UBC Academic Calendar: Regular attendance is expected of students in all their classes. If you miss a class because of illness, watch the lecture you have missed, do all the activities that students did in class, record them and submit to Canvas in the Attendance section. How to submit an online assignment
Home assignments (15%)
Home assignments are mandatory, and they have to be handed in in class or submitted before class on Canvas to Home Assignment section before each class. You will get a full mark for each submitted assignment with 70% correct answers. Home assignments submitted after the due date will receive 80% of the grade. No home assignment will be accepted after the end of classes.
Oral assignments (15%)
There are two oral assignments in this class:

- audio recording N 1 (5%)
- audio recording N 2 (10%).

For the audio recording assignments, you will be asked to record a speech and submit your recordings to your instructor for evaluation. These assignments will be done at home. Audio recording N 1 will include reading any text of your choice. Audio recording N 2 will include talking about a certain aspect of life, or telling a story. The focus of these assignments is pronunciation and intonation. While preparing your recordings, please pay attention to the following: stresses, vowel reduction, the pronunciation of the soft consonants and the Russian «Ы».
Online quizzes (20%)
There will be 12 open -book online quizzes posted on Canvas, which will permit you to assess what you know and what you do not know. The online quizzes can be completed at students’ own pace. Online quizzes submitted after the due date receive 80% of the grade.
Chapter tests (40%)
After each chapter except Chapter 18, there will be a written test. The tests will be -25-30 minutes long, and they will cover both grammar and vocabulary. Details of each test will be announced the week prior to the quiz date. There will be 5 tests, and each test is worth 8%.
There are no traditional final exams or midterms in this course!

Late Penalties:
Home assignments submitted after the due date will receive 80% of the grade.
Audio recordings submitted after the due date will get a full mark but no instructors’ feedback and an opportunity to resubmit the assignment.
