The goal is to help students reach an intermediate\u2013advanced level of proficiency while significantly expanding their vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>In this course, you will explore the following topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Youth and Society<\/li>\n<li>City, Suburb, and Village<\/li>\n<li>Economy and Society<\/li>\n<li>Family<\/li>\n<li>Crime and Punishment<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The Darling&#8221; by Anton Chekhov<\/li>\n<li>A Russian film (TBA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A variety of resources are used to support learning and deepen cultural understanding, including literature, online materials, films, and cartoons.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that students entering this course may have different levels of prior experience with Russian, including heritage speakers. Students who neglect their academic responsibilities may be excluded from final examinations.<\/p>\n<p>Participation grades reflect consistent preparation, engagement in class activities, and contributions to discussions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Homework Assignments (15%)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assignments will be graded on a <strong data-start=\"670\" data-end=\"690\">completion basis<\/strong>. Students who submit thoughtful and complete work on time will receive full credit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"851\">Late submissions will receive a maximum of <strong data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"850\">80% of the assignment value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In-Class Quizzes &amp; Tests (35%)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be four in-class written tests based on course material. Details will be provided one week in advance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Individual Presentation (15%)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will deliver a five-minute presentation on a topic of your choice.<\/p>\n<p>Assessment criteria include preparation, pronunciation, fluency, and accuracy. You may use a cue card with brief notes (no full sentences). Reading from a script will result in a lower grade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scoring Guidelines:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exceptional (95\u2013100%) \u2014 Well-prepared, fluent, no pronunciation errors<\/li>\n<li>Outstanding (90\u201394%) \u2014 Fluent with minor pronunciation errors<\/li>\n<li>Competent (85\u201389%) \u2014 Generally fluent with some errors<\/li>\n<li>Satisfactory (70\u201384%) \u2014 Some preparation; frequent reliance on notes<\/li>\n<li>Adequate (50\u201369%) \u2014 Reads from notes; limited fluency<\/li>\n<li>Inadequate (0\u201349%) \u2014 Difficult to understand; significant pronunciation issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: Expectations for pronunciation may differ slightly for heritage learners.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>In-Class Essays (25%)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be two in-class essays. Topics will be provided in advance.<\/p>\n<p>The first in-class essay is designed as a lower-stakes opportunity to practice expectations and receive feedback. The second essay carries greater weight as it reflects your progress and ability to apply that feedback.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scoring Rubric:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exceptional (90\u2013100%) \u2014 Wide range of structures; minimal errors<\/li>\n<li>Outstanding (80\u201389%) \u2014 Variety of structures; few errors<\/li>\n<li>Competent (70\u201379%) \u2014 Some variety; noticeable errors<\/li>\n<li>Satisfactory (60\u201369%) \u2014 Basic structures; frequent errors<\/li>\n<li>Adequate (50\u201359%) \u2014 Limited structures; errors affect understanding<\/li>\n<li>Inadequate (0\u201349%) \u2014 Very limited language; not comprehensible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>There are no traditional midterms or final exams in this course.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Staying Well in RUSS_V302<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Learning a language is challenging but rewarding. To support your success:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build connections with classmates (in class or on Canvas)<\/li>\n<li>Form study groups or chat groups (e.g., WhatsApp)<\/li>\n<li>Participate in CENES events such as Slavic Tea<\/li>\n<li>Reach out if you are struggling \u2014 support is available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We value respect, honesty, and collaboration. Students are expected to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respect diverse backgrounds and perspectives<\/li>\n<li>Act with integrity and kindness<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to a positive learning environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Academic Integrity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assignments should reflect your own work using course vocabulary and structures. This allows for accurate assessment and meaningful feedback.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grade Review<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Final grades will be posted on Canvas. Students have <strong>three business days<\/strong> to report any discrepancies.
