Opportunities

Students/Postdocs

I am always willing to discuss research opportunities with highly motivated individuals with an interest in basic and applied questions of evolutionary and conservation significance. New lab members typically have a strong academic background in population genetics with an interest in lab and field-based studies (although some prefer to stay in silico).

My training philosophy pairs team-building with individualized approaches to mentoring. I encourage my lab members to work together to foster a respectful and supportive peer-environment, qualities I model and reinforce through our weekly 1-on-1 meetings and lab gatherings. In that vein, I work hard to establish a culture of curiosity, collaboration, gratitude, and evidence-based decision-making. Yet, I also appreciate the different backgrounds, experience and context that each individual brings to my lab, tailoring my approach accordingly while providing equitable access. Likewise, given recent global events, it has never been more important to support student wellbeing; I take pride in being cognizant of individual student’s needs and being approachable (or proactive) when required to help navigate challenges.

The University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus) is located in Kelowna, BC, an ideal geographic location for many types of biological endeavors, with state-of the-art campus laboratories just minutes away from extensive montane, riparian and limnological habitats.
