My name is Ryan Dorey and I am a resource teacher for a private school in Mississauga, Ontario. This is my eighth MET course. I love to explore how technology influences engagement in the classroom and out. At school my favourite club is the all-girls FLL lego robotics team I ran up until last year. This team was set loose on an issue and asked to find an innovative solution that solves a problem. We have designed ideas for apps, built a better batbox and even repackaged hotel shampoo to make it environmentally friendly. The best part is that we always beat the boys! This experience has made the biggest impact on me as a teacher.
I have also come from a background as a computer teacher for children with learning difficulties. Both experiences have convinced me that technology plays a vital role in all student learning, whether it is helping students who are striving to change the world or those who are struggling to memorize times-tables.
Outside of school, I love to visit as many libraries and museums as I can, no matter how big or small. I also love soup and singing. My wife and I have a teenage daughter at university who I have tried to mold into a science and nature freak, but she seems to love books more than bugs. Our dog Lola is staring at me right now and wondering whether she will ever get some “me time” on her own again with all this “Stay Home” business.
I am really looking forward to working with everyone this term.
