bus

Ingrid Bakke recently wrote a blog posting on Switzerland’s upcoming implementation of driverless transit buses in 2016. After reading her article, as well as an article from auto world news, I have come to an understanding about this innovation. The bus company Postbus, has teamed up with BestMile to utilize new technology pioneered by two young graduates from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The buses will be the first driverless buses to be tested and will go through testing with public traffic and pedestrians. However, this technology in not completely new, as several car companies are currently working on this technology.

Ingrid made a few fair assumptions about the consequences of this new technology, such as the money the government will save from employee cutbacks. Ingrid then went further and considered the perspective of the public. I feel that it is going to be very important for the public to be well educated about the safety of the vehicles. I did some research on the technology and found in a tech times article that driverless vehicles could actually be “too safe”. It seems as though it will always be safer to have a human instinct behind the wheel. It will be very interesting to see how the public reacts to this technology. It is very feasible that the public will have a bias to any accidents involving this technology.
