It started off as a lovely summer morning but ended in catastrophe, as 120 people froze to death in a seemingly inconspicuous auditorium in the Henry Angus Building. Okay, so it wasn’t as dramatic as that, though I’m pretty sure we were heading there – my fingernails did almost turn blue.
This was the beginning of our Orientation week and the start of a 16 month journey, that would be challenging, chaotic and full of learning. And of course, as some of our instructors and seniors couldn’t help reminding us every now and then, the first seven weeks (or 3 months, depending on who you spoke to) would be pure torture. All in good spirit of course.
For me, the most memorable moments/events/ (for lack of a better word) things from O-week are:
Day 1:
– The baked goods we got during the break – it was quite awesome.
– The Business Clinic – sounds pretty interesting, if we manage to take out time for it that is.
– The high and low ropes courses. Had to trust my team mates to stick around for me to finish and pull me all the way up the ladder. Got very very very close to a few team mates while trying to avoid being eaten by the stupid looking shark and the more sinister one. And finally, just learned how easy and important it was to let go and trust your team.
Day 2:
– Geoff in a pink shirt and pink shorts. Obviously.
– The team presentations overall were an interesting tool to force us to get to know each other pretty quick and start working as teams.
– The Indian food for lunch was pretty good.
Day 3:
– Trying to figure out complex concepts like creativity and art and doing odd things like drawing aliens.
-The sushi – you either love it or you hate it – I personally couldn’t swallow it.
– The dinner with the Dean. It was nice to see everyone in their finest and mix with the faculty.
Day 4:
– LEGO – definitely the Lego. And the importance of Play.
– An introduction to Good Business, just seems like an exciting avenue to explore.
– The Greek food, which was arguably the best lunch throughout the week.
Day 5:
– A bunch of homework 🙁
– MBA Games – who isn’t excited about them now?
– Having to eat burgers twice in a day!
– The boat cruise, a lovely way to end the week!
So I see a recurring theme here. We like to be fed. At least I very obviously like to be fed. We should be fed more often. Throughout the program. That would be very much appreciated.
