Would you like fries or cruelty with that? Kentucky Fried Chicken may be bringing home an ample 520 million dollars in revenue a year, but with this comes the price of a certain reputation. KFC has been challenged by animal rights activists about the way their suppliers treat the chickens on their farms. Reports made by undercover reporters working for activist group PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) proved disturbing truths to the KFC rumours. In a video taken by the reporters while in the farms, chickens were seen being beaten and slaughtered relentlessly. Overcrowding of chickens in metal cages to save space and debeaking in order to avoid the chickens pecking at each other was also found at the farms. While very unethical, KFC’s suppliers are also breaking numerous laws in the way they treat their chickens, such as by exceeding the maximum allowable bird density.
For KFC it may be worth mistreating chickens to cut down costs in their farms in order to make the most profitable business, but for consumers this may not be the case. Many KFC customers have boycotted the company completely, myself included. I don’t believe that KFC is taking a professional approach to maximizing their revenue. There may be a certain blind-eye for unethical behaviour in the business world, but this is crossing the line.
