Rationale

The rationale behind this portfolio can be described as an attempt to make connections and bridge between my initial motivation for enrolling in this program, my past experience and my vision for my future development as a learner and educator.

  • the goals I wanted to achieve with the MET program
  • the goals I have met:
  • the goals I have not met,
  • other outcomes that I achieved but have not planned to initially
  • new goals that are in front of me

I went back and examined my motivation for enrolling in the MET program. I discovered my application letter dating May 7th, 2008, which states the following main motivation for my enrolment in the program:

  • Being an educator in the dynamic field of technology is a constant learning environment for both the educator and the students. Technology is changing at such a rapid rate that one must be continuously learning and striving for technological betterment to be successful a successful educator in this age of brisk development. The area of technology is fascinating in that what might have been relevant 10 years ago, might be considered outdated today. In particular, the quadratic formula is the same today it was 10, 20, 30 years ago; the same can’t be said about technology. As an educator, I feel that the Master of Education Technology (MET) offered at the University of British Columbia allows me as a educator to explore the use and impact of technology in the classroom. As a educator in technology, one must be always learning to stay ahead and I feel that the MET will allow me the opportunity to do so.
  • The other area of concern for educators and stakeholders in education is that of the planning and management of technology that is both suitable and affordable for the school. As the Technology Support Teacher at Mission Secondary, not only do I need to be aware the most modern and affordable software available, I also need to know how to effectively use this software as well as troubleshoot for my colleagues. I believe that the MET program would allow me to fulfill my obligation to my school, staff and students.
  • My final goal would be to expand my development of technology as a learning tool for students with curriculum in mind. Students will not be successful if the educator does not properly design and develop technology that allows students to learn the vital skills required in the 21st century. Also, with the expansion of online schools, virtual schools, and home-base learning, an effective educator must be aware that alternative delivery is not only crucial but essential in each school district across the province.

As I revisited my initiating motivation, and reflected upon my experience in the program through examining various artefacts, I realized how many of my goals were achieved. I will show evidences of what have I achieved through this portfolio, from course (assignments) artefacts and application of theory in my work.

During my revisit I also realized how many new doors have I opened up and I am eager to discover what is behind some of them. This portfolio is an attempt to freeze in a sequence of time a dynamic moment of learning, of continual change and continual becoming. I have learned much, but there is so many more to come. For this reasons I named my portfolio “A Scientific Journey Through the MET Program.”; trying to make continuous observations of the world around me by using my senses.
