Week 8 – October 23rd – October 30th
I have started my journey through through ETEC 590 and have come to the “building’ phase of my e-Portfolio and have decided to blog about my experience to share with not only you, the reader but also, for my own reflection and understanding.
I’ve decided to use WordPress as my platform of choice as I used it last semester in ETEC 565a and really like ability in WordPress to not only host a site but have a blog feature built into it. After some research I’ve found many benefits to using WordPress and they include:
- Easy to create and manage site content.
- Blog and site have the same look
- Same SEO (search engine optimization) benefits are accrued by WordPress pages that posts enjoy.
- WordPress pages have “parent pages” a section that has sub-pages in it.
- A plethora of plugins that extend and enhance the functionality of WordPress that are easy to use (however since I’m using UBC’s hosting, some features will not be available to me).
So far in creating my e-Portfolio, I have completed the following tasks:
- Gone through “WordPress Essential Training” at Lynda.com to reinforce what I already know about WordPress but also, learn a few new tricks (ie. parent/child relationships, how to change the header, how to change the Homepage)
- Selected a theme that I thought fit well for my goals as well as put in a header and quote that I thought was appropriate
- Started developing my pages (finished setting up all of the parent pages and some child pages)
- Started on my Hypothesis page by including my PLT and my Purpose page by outlining my Educational Philosophy
- Completed my Materials page (UBC courses and my biography)
This week I’m looking to start developing my Procedures page which will focus on my journey through my courses and selecting appropriate artifacts for my e-Portfolio. Hopefully, I will get through a good portion of this by the end of the week.
