Last Week

Well the finishing touches are upon us and the end is very near.  During my peer reviews, it was suggested that I change my banner to something that was more reflective of my metaphor so I came up with one that I created in Photoshop.  The only problem was I forgot that I had already created my Guided Tour with the old banner so I have to redo my Guided Tour with the new banner.   After that, I’ll be Peer Reviewing two guided tours and then submitting my e-Portfolio for assessment.

The Final Stretch!!!
This is the final stretch in my journey through the MET program and I’m starting to get mixed emotions.  First of all, I’m getting excited as I’ve almost completed my journey through this vigorous yet exciting program.  Secondly, I’m becoming nostalgic looking back on three years of learning that occurred through my journey.  Finally, I’m feeling a bit sad remembering all of the great people I’ve met through this journey and how I’m going to miss the daily interaction.

Things I must do this week:

  • Complete my guided tour for my website
  • Finish my conclusions
  • Peer review for Jennifer and Jason
  • Edit my site from my peer reviews
I am also wrapping up ETEC 540 at the same time so I have a bit of work to do in that course as well.  I can see the light!!!

Almost there

I can see my journey is almost complete.  I have written up reflections for all of my courses (sans ETEC 540 which I will complete next week as I’m not completed the course) and have received valuable feedback from my peers.  I also did two peer reviews for their artefacts.

This week I’m hoping to finish up my home page and conclusion page and then early next week, I can put the finishing touches on my site.

The journey is almost complete…………the memories rushing back to me as I do my reflections and it is a bitter sweet moment for me right now.

Nov 6th to Nov 13th

I got a little sidetracked last week and instead of completing my course reflections (I completed only 1 – ETEC 500), I found myself working on the front end of my e-Portfolio.  I have completed the first three pages (Purpose, Hypothesis, Materials) as I felt this would give me more direction when I was doing my reflection.  I’m pretty happy with the results of all of the hard work that I put in.

This week I will re-visit my course reflections and I’m glad I did not stick to my original plan as the first three pages required me to go back and revisit my MET courses.  So I will hopefully get a good portion of these reflections for the courses done as I still need to do a tour video, introduction page and conclusion page before we start peer reviewing next week, so I’ve got some work ahead of me.

I also have to prepare three artefacts for review so I’m going to do my ETEC 565a course first as it has my Blog and Moodle site which I deem are my two favorite artefacts I’ve acquired throughout my journey.

I’ve been enjoying this project immensely and the courses and material I learned are coming back to me more and more.  This enables me to be quite happy that I choose to the MET as my educational journey.

Week Oct 31st – Nov 6th

I have stepped back for a few days in regards to my e-Portfolio for a couple of reasons; 1) to reflect and think about how I want to manage my site in terms of tying it in with my metaphor and 2) to finish up my research paper in ETEC 540.

The break rejuvenated me and I’ve come up with some new ideas.  I’m thinking about combining two pages into one; the conclusion and observation pages are essentially the same idea and I think I can combine them and just call it conclusions.  An e-Portfolio is a journey and there will be times when you have to slow down and take a look at where you’ve come from and where you want to go; this might lead you into a new direction altogether or just a slight diversion.  I’m thinking I’m just taking a slight diversion.

Looking ahead, I’ve created a “Course Description” for each of my 10 courses as well completing the Procedures title page.  This week I’m going to be going through each course to select a artefact or two as well as come up with a reflection of the course.  I’m hoping to get through all of the courses by the end of the week but realistically, if I get half of them done, I will be satisfied.  I will also, hope to fully use WinHTTracker to back up my site.

My Journey Begins

Week 8 – October 23rd – October 30th

I have started my journey through through ETEC 590 and have come to the “building’ phase of my e-Portfolio and have decided to blog about my experience to share with not only you, the reader but also, for my own reflection and understanding.

I’ve decided to use WordPress as my platform of choice as I used it last semester in ETEC 565a and really like ability in WordPress to not only host a site but have a blog feature built into it.  After some research I’ve found many benefits to using WordPress and they include:

  • Easy to create and manage site content.
  • Blog and site have the same look
  • Same SEO (search engine optimization) benefits are accrued by WordPress pages that posts enjoy.
  • WordPress pages have “parent pages” a section that has sub-pages in it.
  • A plethora of plugins that extend and enhance the functionality of WordPress that are easy to use (however since I’m using UBC’s hosting, some features will not be available to me).

So far in creating my e-Portfolio, I have completed the following tasks:

  • Gone through “WordPress Essential Training” at Lynda.com to reinforce what I already know about WordPress but also, learn a few new tricks (ie.  parent/child relationships, how to change the header, how to change the Homepage)
  • Selected a theme that I thought fit well for my goals as well as put in a header and quote that I thought was appropriate
  • Started developing my pages (finished setting up all of the parent pages and some child pages)
  • Started on my Hypothesis page by including my PLT and my Purpose page by outlining my Educational Philosophy
  • Completed my Materials page (UBC courses and my biography)

This week I’m looking to start developing my Procedures page which will focus on my journey through my courses and selecting appropriate artifacts for my e-Portfolio.  Hopefully, I will get through a good portion of this by the end of the week.
