Hello all! My name is Samuel King and I am a third year student at the University of British Columbia. My major is Geographical Biogeosciences(that is a mouthful!) but I am focusing on GIS, also known as Geographic Information Science/Systems, and Biogeography. GIS can be thought of as map making with statistics. These statistics can range anywhere from what kind of diseases certain demographics have, who voted for what political party and also what agricultural practices a region conducts. I am focusing on GIS because I believe it is a field with lots of opportunity that will only continue to grow.
Prior to UBC, I attended Langara College in Vancouver, British Columbia. I spent 3 whole years there with no break meaning I took summer courses as well. However I feel my time there provided an invaluable learning experience. This is the place where I discovered my passion for Environmental Studies and Health Sciences. These interdisciplinary fields taught me that everything we come across in life is either directly or indirectly related to each other in some capacity. I graduated from Langara College in 2014 with an Associates of Science Degree in Environmental Studies and an Associates of Arts Degree in Health Sciences. I am proud of these accomplishments but am hungry for more!
This coming summer I hope to work with GIScientists in and around Vancouver. I have been so focused on my studies that I have not had the pleasure of partaking in any research outside of school. That being the case, I feel my background in Environmental Studies and Health Sciences as well as developing quality resume/cover letter skills in this course will increase my chances of landing a great summer job.
