ENGL 301

English 301: Technical Writing

This upper-level course for 3rd and 4th year students, offered at the Univeristy of British Columbia, is taught through Distance Education by Professor Erika Paterson. It seeks to give students the opportunity to acquire indispensable written communication skills used in business and professional activities. Furthermore, the course will guide students in how to properly prepare proposals, reports, abstracts and correspondence. ENGL 301 spans the typical four months like other university courses with course material spread out over four learning units. These units will allow students to hone their writing skills for a variety of audiences. During the term students will form writing teams that will enable constructive feedback on each others work. Students will also engage in online platforms such as WordPress, LinkedIn, Facebook, email and individual blogs.

In the past, I have not had the best experiences in English courses. However I am really looking forward to improving my written communication skills with this course. My reasons for enrolling in this course involve needing upper-level credit for graduation and more importantly gaining proficiency in designing resumes and cover letters. I believe having a well structured resume and cover letter can significantly improve my chances of landing a desirable job. I feel that effective communication through writing has the ability to make work more efficient and enjoyable!
