Hi! Welcome to my Web Folio.

My name is Enguang Shi, and I am currently a new student in the BCS (Bachelor of Computer Science) program at the University of British Columbia. In 2019, I graduated from Shanghai University with a Bachelor of Economics degree. Although I majored in International Economics and Trade before, I discovered my interest in computer science, particularly in its practical applications. My first exposure to computer science was through a group project I led. In this project, the most difficult procedure was to collect daily historical prices in the previous five years, which was a considerably sized dataset for us. Eventually, I was able to solve the problem faced by the group through learning an online course about how to extract financial data from the web using Python. Finally, we applied the knowledge of financial risk management to the data and successfully completed the project. I felt fulfilled for being able to find a more efficient way to get things done and help others through my work.

In my other projects and internship experiences, I also felt that in addressing many practical problems, we needed to conduct a lot of data processing and analysis, and computer science techniques are an indispensable tool at this stage. This made me realize the importance of computer science and have the idea of applying for a computer science program. Finally, I got into UBC’s BCS program. For me, It was like a dream came true.

Seeing as statistics and econometrics are my favorite and most powerful skills in my study, I think I will be a perfect fit to work in the intersection of these fields incorporating combining computer science techniques. After completing the BCS program, I wish to obtain solid advanced computer science knowledge and techniques. Hopefully, in a few years, I will be a well-qualified professional worker in data analysis.
