The first week of practicum has been exciting and I have already learned my first lesson as a new teacher – be flexible. This week I started teaching Socials 11 but after my first lesson the counselor came in and was ready to start preparing the grade 11’s for course selection for the following year. My SA had forgotten this was happening. There were two days allotted to course planning which meant that I was behind in my schedule for 2 lessons. With only 8 weeks to teach the unit time was tight so I was a little worried but I was also a little relieved because it meant I had more time to lesson plan.
We have been warned in the program that a teacher needs to be flexible – the plan is not always going to go according to plan. I think it will all work out but it’s a good thing I made that plan in pencil!
