Projection-on-the-fly mapping does not actually alter the projection a map component is in. It simply adjusts the image that displays within ArcMap, so that to the naked eye, a layer’s features will line up and make sense. On the other hand, a Transformation command alters the actual coordinate system of the layer. As we saw in the previous question, the map’s projection significantly impacts graphical analysis.
