Vancouver Technical Secondary School
I completed my 10-week practicum at Vancouver Technical Secondary School in Vancouver, BC. In this dynamic and culturally diverse school, I taught English 8 and 11 and PHE 8 and 10. For my English 11 Lord of the Flies unit I incorporated the Team-Based Learning Approach and outdoor experiential learning to deeply engage my students. I challenged students to look beyond a basic allegorical lens, and read the book in light of the First People’s principle “learning involves generational roles and responsibilities” as a corrective to its horrors. In my English 8 class, I taught a unit on Heros, Myths & Legends, which incorporated the West Coast Legends series by Roy Henry Vickers & Robert Budd, and emphasized ownership and protocols for indigenous texts as well as three First People’s Principles of Learning. I also taught units on grade 10 Circuit Training, Football, Goal Setting and Minor Games, which integrated the Teaching Games for Understanding pedagogical models. With my PHE 8s, I taught Basketball and Rugby units which stressed Hellison’t Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility model. Lastly, I took part in the weekly 315 Homework club as well as the morning breakfast club.
