{"id":84,"date":"2020-11-03T16:49:38","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T23:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/?p=84"},"modified":"2020-11-03T16:49:38","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T23:49:38","slug":"week-8-signs-of-crisis-in-a-gilded-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/2020\/11\/03\/week-8-signs-of-crisis-in-a-gilded-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 8 &#8211; Signs of Crisis in a Gilded Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week we reviewed\/ revisited the idea that Latin America is, as Alexander Dawson describes it, as being Gilded with modernity.\u00a0 Modernity affects only parts of Latin America and ignores others.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/Ruben_Dario-traje-diplomatico-768x383-1-e1604445214233-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/Ruben_Dario-traje-diplomatico-768x383-1-e1604445214233-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/Ruben_Dario-traje-diplomatico-768x383-1-e1604445214233.jpg 558w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Poet Ruben Dario<\/p>\n<p>This week I wanted to focus on the poem by Ruben Dario, called &#8220;To Rosevelt&#8221;.\u00a0 I found this poem to be powerful and meaningful.\u00a0 At the beginning of the poem, Dario states how the U.S. is.\u00a0 He powerfully states how the US is a mixed bag of &#8220;primitive and modern&#8221; nature.\u00a0 He continues by recognizing that the US is becoming a stronger force, but he also makes a point to remind the reader that Latin America is also strong.\u00a0 He makes a strong statement acknowledging that Latin America is made up of many races (mainly as a result of colonization).\u00a0 He warns the US that they, Lain America, are children of the Sun and to beware.\u00a0 I loved his expression of pride and admiration of what Latin America has become and its potential.\u00a0 I really enjoyed this poem and interpreting it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-89 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/Chile-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/Chile-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/Chile-624x413.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/Chile.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Santiago, Chile<\/p>\n<p>What did you think about this weeks poem?\u00a0 Were there any other parts of the poem you found?
