{"id":96,"date":"2020-11-15T15:15:39","date_gmt":"2020-11-15T22:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/?p=96"},"modified":"2020-11-15T15:15:39","modified_gmt":"2020-11-15T22:15:39","slug":"week-10-power-to-the-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/2020\/11\/15\/week-10-power-to-the-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 10 &#8211; Power to the People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week we looked at populism and Argentinas&#8217;\u00a0 first lady Evita.<\/p>\n<p>This week we learned of the concept of populism political representation.\u00a0 When I googled the definition of populism I got a vague answer; &#8220;A political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups&#8221;.\u00a0 I then thought don&#8217;t all politicians make an attempt to sympathize with the citizens of the country they are looking to lead?\u00a0 As I continued to read the lecture I learned that a lot of the politicians I thought about could be considered populist.\u00a0 I also learned that this term was hard to define because of its overuse.\u00a0 It has been used to describe many politicians, this makes populism hard to define because it is used to describe so many.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-99 size-medium alignleft\" style=\"font-size: 1rem; margin-top: 0.857143rem; margin-bottom: 0.857143rem;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/us-POP-170x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/us-POP-170x300.png 170w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/us-POP.png 172w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-98 alignnone\" style=\"margin-top: 0.857143rem; margin-bottom: 0.857143rem;\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/POP-us.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This is a list of Populists in the Americas. (via Wikipedia)<\/p>\n<p>A well known Argentinan populist is Maria Eva Duarte de Peron.\u00a0 Evita,\u00a0 as she is named by those who loved her, she became an icon for her humanitarian efforts.\u00a0 Evita was born into a poor family, she left her childhood home as a teen to become and actress in Buenos Aires.\u00a0 She met her husband at a fundraiser.\u00a0 They got married a year later and she began her fight for women&#8217;s rights and working toward providing aid to the poor class and children and women.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-101 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/peron-300x271.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/peron-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/peron.jpg 404w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Her humanitarian efforts led to her follower&#8217;s love and support for her run for Vice Presidency. In fact, when she had to resign from the run her supporters rejected her decline.\u00a0 She would have been able to continue her candidacy with her husband if she wasn&#8217;t diagnosed with cancer.\u00a0 This cancer took her from her loving support at the age of 33.\u00a0 There were some things she did that have continued a legacy for Evita. In fact, there is now a museum all about it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-100 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/gettyimages-3422584-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/gettyimages-3422584-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/gettyimages-3422584-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/gettyimages-3422584-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/gettyimages-3422584-1536x863.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/gettyimages-3422584-2048x1151.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/saritaponce\/files\/2020\/11\/gettyimages-3422584-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Something that I learn through my own research is that she can be seen as a hypocrite.\u00a0 Some see her lavish lifestyle that she lived as hypocritical.\u00a0 As she continues to help out women and children who are poor while wearing expensive clothes and jewels is seen as a hypocritical act.\u00a0 Those who didn&#8217;t like Evita had this as one of their reasons to dislike her.<\/p>\n<p>What are your thoughts on Evita?
