There are a number of strategies and tools that are used for exams.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canvas Exam Integrity Measures<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Randomization: Randomizing the order of questions can prevent students from collaborating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Single Question Display: Displaying questions one at a time can discourage students from taking screenshots, downloading, and printing extire exams for sharing elsewhere<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Question Banks: The use of question bank groupings can prevent students from collaborating during an exam as Canvas selects individualized questions for each student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Timer: Timed exams can ensure that students have enough time to recall responses, but enough time to look up answers or collaborate with each other<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exam Design: Various exam designs can help prevent academic integrity issues in individual circumstances<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Question Types: Create the exam with question types designed for integrity. Instructors should be familiar with what kind of question types are available Review the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Student-Guide\/How-do-I-answer-each-type-of-question-in-a-quiz\/ta-p\/474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">question types and how to answer them.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-48810\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Do you Qualify for Live Support?<\/h4><div id=\"ac-48810\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Support for in-person Canvas exams are available to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exams no longer than 3 hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10 or more students are writing the same exam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exam is scheduled to begin and end between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm PT<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instructors are expected to be present in the exam room and available on MS Teams throughout the exam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Only 1 alternate exam per course will be supported if it meets the criteria above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning Services <strong>does not<\/strong> currently have the capacity to provide live support for take-home exams, assignments, or Centre for Accessibility students who are writing outside of the main sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please make sure to submit the Midterm &amp; Final Exam Request Qualtrics Survey to the Office of Student Academic Services (OSAS) by the stated deadline at the beginning of each term. Late submissions may limit Learning Services\u2019 ability to provide exam support.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-48811\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Integrity Pledge<\/h4><div id=\"ac-48811\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning Services will copy an Integrity Pledge into a course several days before the actual exam date (if not earlier). There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ubc.ca\/courses\/92104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tech Check course<\/a> available for students to self-enroll. We are happy to help with all of the following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prepare for an online exam<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technical Checks \u2014 Instructors and students should self-enroll in the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ubc.ca\/enroll\/RK33KJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UBC Sauder Exam Tech Check Course<\/a>&#8221; to identify technical problems prior to an exam. This course teaches students what to expect when writing a Canvas online exam and includes an &#8220;Integrity Pledge and Tech Check&#8221; quiz that mimics an exam&#8217;s settings and question types, ensuring that students become familiar with the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exam Rooms &#8211; the OSAS office on behalf of undergraduate, graduate, and diploma programs facilitate exam room bookings as well as the hiring of invigilators. Please email <a href=\"mailto:OSASoperations@sauder.ubc.ca\">OSASoperations@sauder.ubc.ca<\/a> to confirm your requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Build the exam<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sauder Learning Services kindly asks for a lead time of at least 10 business days to help instructors build Canvas online exams. To ensure these components are added, please email <a>help@sauder.ubc.ca<\/a> when your exam is ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">configure the settings<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following Canvas quiz settings are recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Include the term and date in the exam title (e.g. 2024W2 COMM 333 Final Exam \u2013 April 2, 2025).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clarify in the instructions what materials, hardware, and software students are allowed to use during their exams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the time limit as the exact exam time (i.e. a two-hour exam will be 120 minutes) Do NOT check the boxes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cAllow Multiple Attempts\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cLet Students See Their Quiz Responses (Incorrect Questions Will Be Marked in Student Feedback)\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the exam is published, set its Grade Posting Policy to <em>Manual<\/em> (visible in its column in Grades). This ensures students do not see their marks immediately after submitting the exam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">give students access to the exam<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once published, a Canvas quiz is assigned to \u201cEveryone\u201d in the course by default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instructors can configure the exam to be assigned to different students at different times\/dates. For example, one section in the morning and the other in the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-10434-4152669141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assigning an exam to a course section<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-9973-4152101242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assigning the exam to individual students<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To set up exam times and dates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leave the due date blank.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the \u201cAvailable from\u201d to the exact time\/date when the exam is scheduled to start.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the \u201cAvailable until\u201d time to 1 hour after the exam is supposed to end. This gives Learning Services a \u201ccushion\u201d to extend student timers in case they run into any technical difficulties and need more time. Use the +Add button to configure other settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-48813\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">In-Person Canvas Exam Support<\/h4><div id=\"ac-48813\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instructors must be in attendance during exams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Expect<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">30 minutes prior to the exam, all the invigilators and instructors will meet to go over the requirements of the invigilators, room assignments, how the exam is set up and the specifics of the in-person exam. Invigilators will then go to their assigned rooms. Approximately 15 mins prior to the exam, students will be let into the room to set up their devices and troubleshoot any technical issues prior to the exam start time. When the exam begins, the instructor or invigilator will release the password to the students in their classroom. Students will enter the password and begin to write. Invigilators will monitor the student screens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least one day before your exam, Learning Services will create an MS Teams chat with instructors, TAs, and invigilators. This chat will be used as a communications back-channel to resolve any technical issues that arise during the exam as well as to clarify any exam policies. Instructors are expected to be available on MS Teams chat during the exam to make any high-level decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invigilators are responsible for monitoring academic integrity as well as performing basic technical troubleshooting for students, per their training. Any issues that invigilators are not able to resolve will be escalated to the Learning Services team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a technical issue is unresolvable, a floater invigilator will escort students to the backup computer lab booked for each exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For TAs and invigilators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>If they don&#8217;t have an MS Teams email log in, they should: <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sign up for UBC Student Email\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myaccount.ubc.ca\/myAccount\/login.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CWL MyAccount page<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Optional) Rename your CWL ID<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <em>Activate Student Email<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and accept Terms of Use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your <a href=\"mailto:cwl@student.ubc.ca\">cwl@student.ubc.ca<\/a> email will be created within 2 hrs and;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you will also automatically get access to MS Teams and OneDrive within 48 hrs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information on MS Teams is available&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/it.ubc.ca\/services\/email-voice-internet\/microsoft-teams#facstaff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">exam bulletins page<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An \u201cExam Bulletins\u201d page will be set up in each Canvas course \u2014 this will be linked within the exam\u2019s instructions for students to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any exam-wide issues are detected \u2014 including&nbsp;typos, broken links, images not showing up, and more \u2014 Learning Services will be able to update this page in real-time to provide information to students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This bulletins page opens in a new tab and works with Lockdown Browser-enabled exams as well. It is okay for students to have it open during the exam, and a pop-up banner will inform them if any changes are made.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2022\/08\/exam-support.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-692\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Learning Services is supporting an exam, the following text will be added into the instructions box of the exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">moderating a quiz<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once a Canvas quiz is published, a \u201cModerate This Quiz\u201d link will appear in the sidebar on the top-right of the quiz page. This page displays information about student submissions and exam progress \u2014 it is also where extra time and extra attempts can be added, as well as where student activity can be monitored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-26218-once-i-publish-a-quiz-how-do-i-use-the-moderate-quiz-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Using the \u201cModerate This Quiz\u201d page<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/ubcsauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2022\/08\/exam-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-695\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding time<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time can be added to any exam attempt in progress. If a student loses time troubleshooting a technical issue for example, this time can be given back \u2014 however, Learning Services does not typically do so unless 5 minutes or more is lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.ubc.ca\/courses\/4276\/pages\/adding-time-and-attempts?module_item_id=4283772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adding extra time for a student<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding attempts<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once a Canvas quiz is submitted, it cannot be re-opened. With permission from the instructor, students can be given an extra attempt in scenarios involving accidental submissions, timers running out during troubleshooting, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student work from their first attempt will not be overwritten \u2014 however, their answers will not show up when they begin their second attempt. Usually, students are advised to simply continue where they left off. All attempts will be available to view and grade in SpeedGrader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/Once-I-publish-a-quiz-how-can-I-give-my-students-extra-attempts\/ta-p\/1242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adding extra attempts for students<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring student activity<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student activity can be monitored through Canvas Quiz logs, which provide live time-stamped information regarding a student\u2019s progress on the exam, including which questions they have read and answered. It\u2019s important to note that while the logs provide a good overview of the student\u2019s activity, they don\u2019t show a perfect play-by-play of activity. Accurate logs are not available for Fill-in-Multiple-Blanks, Matching, Multiple Answers, and Multiple Dropdown questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The logs are also helpful in determining how much time a student actually lost while troubleshooting, since every instance of exiting and resuming the exam on Canvas is recorded as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructor-Guide\/How-do-I-view-a-quiz-log-for-a-student\/ta-p\/580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Viewing student logs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Canvas FAQ during live exams<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-48814\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">Checklist of best practices to consider prior to your exam<\/h4><div id=\"ac-48814\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid any issues during the exam, here are some pre-emptive measures you can take: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask students to ensure that all other applications and tabs are closed, to maximize the functionality of Canvas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask students to ensure that their browser is up to date. In most cases, the student&#8217;s answers should still be saving.
