Quizzes created for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with standard browsers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enable LockDown Browser use in your Canvas course<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can enable Lockdown Browser for use in your Canvas course by adding it to your Course Navigation. This step is necessary for you to use LockDown Browser in Canvas and will not impact what students see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to your Canvas course and click&nbsp;<strong>Settings<\/strong>&nbsp;in the Course Navigation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>Navigation<\/strong>&nbsp;tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find the &#8220;LockDown Browser&#8221; menu item, click the&nbsp;<strong>three vertical dots<\/strong>&nbsp;(options icon), and choose&nbsp;<strong>Enable<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll to the bottom of the page and click&nbsp;<strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will now see the Lockdown Browser option in your Course Navigation. This navigation item is for managing the use of LockDown Browser in the course and will not be visible to students.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LDB Troubleshooting FAQs during Live Exams<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7280\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student lost connection to the internet \/ a student has a frozen screen<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7280\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this is a timed quiz, please track the amount of time spent on troubleshooting technical problems so that the student&#8217;s exam time can be extended as necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The on-site support person should do the following for the student(s) to exit Lockdown Browser:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on the <strong>globe\/\u24d8 icon<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Proctor Exit<\/strong> in the pop-up window.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the <strong>proctor exit password<\/strong> (can be found in the LDB tab settings) (case-sensitive) &gt; click <strong>OK<\/strong>. This will shut down Lockdown Browser.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relaunch Lockdown Browser and log into Canvas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to the quiz and click <strong>Resume Quiz<\/strong>. Any answers that were previously answered should be saved. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the exam is completely remote, the instructor needs to decide whether to give the <strong>proctor exit password<\/strong> to the student(s) so they can complete the steps above. Otherwise, the student(s) should hard-restart their computer by holding the on\/off button for 5 seconds and turning the device on again.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7281\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">The quiz and its images are lagging or not loading<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7281\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If only individual students are encountering the issue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure the <a href=\"https:\/\/download.respondus.com\/lockdown\/download.php?id=695714529\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/download.respondus.com\/lockdown\/download.php?id=695714529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latest version of Respondus Lockdown Browser<\/a> is intalled on the student&#8217;s computer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure any VPNs running are turned off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If students need to exit Lockdown Browser to do the steps above, please see the instructions provided in the item above. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If most or all students are encountering the issue, the instructor or TA(s) need to check for the following in the Canvas course:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <strong>Files <\/strong>from the course menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure the quiz images files, as well as the folders they are located in, are published. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure the embeddedimages are located in the current Canvas course. If you are not sure how to fix the issue, please contact Learning Services for support.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7282\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student is unable to launch Lockdown Browser<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7282\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure any VPNs running are turned off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure any open windows and applications on the computer are turned off. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure the student is clicking on the Lockdown Browser application (on the desktop for Windows, searching in the Launchpad for Macs).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check to see if the student has the latest version downloaded. If not, uninstall and reinstall the program. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7283\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">There is an Error showing in Lockdown Browser<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7283\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If multiple students are experiencing issues using Lockdown Browser, you may want to check your Canvas course to see if there is an &#8220;Error&#8221; showing up in the Lockdown Browser settings for the quiz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <strong>Lockdown Browser<\/strong> from the course menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there is a prompt indicating an error next to the quiz name, click <strong>Fix Error.<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"508\" height=\"148\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2026\/01\/examsupport_ldberror.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2026\/01\/examsupport_ldberror.png 508w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/sauderteachingplaybook\/files\/2026\/01\/examsupport_ldberror-300x87.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. If no error is indicated, please contact Learning Services for support.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7284\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">I am receiving &#8216;invalid&#8217; when entering the proctor exit password<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7284\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When inputting the proctor exit password to exit an exam, there is a popup that says &#8220;invalid.&#8221; This occurs because the proctor exit password was changed after the student launched Lockdown Browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To exit the exam, please do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try inputting &#8220;escape&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If &#8220;escape&#8221; does not work, hard-restart the student&#8217;s computer by holding the on\/off button for 5 seconds then turning the device back on <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7285\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student is unable to submit their quiz due to connection problems<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7285\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please ask the student(s) to follow the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take a screenshot or picture of the answers in case they are not saved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Porctor exit the LockDown Browser (see the first &#8220;A student lost connection to the internet \/ a student has a frozen screen&#8221; accordion).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disconnect from the wi-fi network for a minute, then reconnect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Come back to the exam to finish submitting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a big portion of the answers is lost, you might consider granting the student(s) additional attempts to rewrite the unsaved questions. Please follow the steps for &#8220;I would like to add additional attempts to an individual student&#8221; under Canvas FAQ.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7286\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student received the Configuration failed error when updating Lockdown Browser<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7286\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please let the student try uninstalling, then <a href=\"https:\/\/download.respondus.com\/lockdown\/download.php?id=695714529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reinstalling Lockdown Browser.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7287\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student&#8217;s Lockdown Browser indicates that Siri is running<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7287\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The student should be able to click <strong>Kill these applications<\/strong> to solve this problem. Do not start any other app or search for anything else in the Finder. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a prompt appears that says &#8220;Siriknowledged&#8221; follow the instructions here: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.respondus.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/4409595654171-Siri-detected-as-running-on-Mac\">https:\/\/support.respondus.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/4409595654171-Siri-detected-as-running-on-Mac<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7288\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student receives a pop-up window that notes Some Blacklisted Application(s) are running and it does not go away after clicking Kill these applications<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7288\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes this occurs when there are numerous Blacklisted Applications running. To work around this, please ask the student to keep clicking <strong>Quit Lockdown Browser<\/strong> repeatedly, until the window closes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-7289\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student&#8217;s Lockdown Browser indicates that Chrome Remote Desktop is running even though Chrome is closed and the Remote Desktop is disabled<\/h5><div id=\"ac-7289\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please ask the student to completely uninstall the Chrome Remote Desktop plug-in for Lockdown Browser. Please note that clicking <strong>Kill all applications<\/strong> will not work.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-72810\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">When the student launch Lockdown Browser, the window will appear then disappear<\/h5><div id=\"ac-72810\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please ask the student to follow the steps below: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/66622\/stupid-geek-tricks-6-ways-to-open-windows-task-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Task Manager (Windows)<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-ca\/guide\/activity-monitor\/welcome\/mac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Activity Monitor (Mac).<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>End any Respondus Lockdown Browser processes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relaunch Lockdown Browser.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-72811\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student receives a pop-up window that notes Your instructor hasn&#8217;t enabled the use of a tablet for your exam<\/h5><div id=\"ac-72811\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <strong>Lockdown Browser<\/strong> in the Canvas course navigation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the <strong>downward arrow icon <\/strong>in front of the quiz you are managing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Settings <\/strong>in the dropdown menu that occurs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Advanced Settings.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Allow students to take this exam with an iPad (using the &#8220;LockDown Browser&#8221; app from the Apple App Store).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Save + Close.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-72812\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student receives a Swipe Gesture warning<\/h5><div id=\"ac-72812\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students will get a warning message about a Swipe Gesture, which occurs when a swipe gesture is detected on a laptop-s touchpad by LockDown Browser, and if their behaviour is repeated, LockDown Browser will kick the student out of the exam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please let the student try uninstalling, then <a href=\"https:\/\/download.respondus.com\/lockdown\/download.php?id=695714529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reinstalling LockDown Browser.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js faq-accordion-tech-page\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h5 id=\"at-72813\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\">A student receives a warning message stating Update server is not supplying information, or the connection to update server is blocked<\/h5><div id=\"ac-72813\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When students receive a warning message stating &#8220;Update server is not supplying information, or the connection to update server is blocked,&#8221; this means that security settings or another application is blocking acess to the Respondus servers that LockDown Browser uses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please ask the student to follow the steps below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disable all anti-virus and firewall software on the computer and try the exam again<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reset your computer&#8217;s internet options. For Windows users, go to control panel and select &#8220;Network and Internet.&#8221; Once there, click on &#8220;Internet Options&#8221;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the &#8220;Security&#8221; tab, ensure that your settings are not higher than &#8220;Medium&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the Advanced tab, click &#8220;Reset&#8221; located under the header &#8220;Reset Internet Explorer Settings&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the window that opens, select &#8220;Delete Personal Settings&#8221; and then click on the Reset button.
