{"id":15371,"date":"2020-02-07T08:43:17","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T16:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scarfedigitalsandbox-teach-educ.sites.olt.ubc.ca\/?p=10721"},"modified":"2020-02-07T08:43:17","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T16:43:17","slug":"interdisciplinary-unit-planning-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/scarfesandbox\/2020\/02\/07\/interdisciplinary-unit-planning-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Interdisciplinary Unit Planning: Secondary Art, Sci, SS"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Interweaving subjects to create an interdisciplinary Unit:<\/h1>\n<h3>Step-by-Step<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>Moving beyond a fragmented and isolated approach in lesson planning towards an interdisciplinary approach to unit planning with connections to social realities, this blog post takes you step-by-step through one approach to designing an interdisciplinary unit<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThe approach outlined here by Nashwa Kedhr, FoE graduate student, utilizes an interesting \u2018search curriculum\u2019 tool housed on the Ministry of BC\u2019s Curriculum website: <a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/curriculum\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/curriculum\/search<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using this tool, one can search for the big ideas, content and competencies for multiple selected subjects and grade levels in order to explore possibilities and curriculum alignment for a theme. Students then analyze the influence of an individual\u2019s actions in terms of resistance, agency and discrimination.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/scarfedigitalsandbox-teach-educ.sites.olt.ubc.ca\/files\/2020\/02\/SocialStudiesG10.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social Studies Lesson<\/a><br \/>\nUseful resource on residential schools could be found on the Teach BC website: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bctf.ca\/HiddenHistory\/eBook.pdf\">https:\/\/www.bctf.ca\/HiddenHistory\/eBook.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Science Lesson<\/h4>\n<p>In relation to depletion of natural resources, students explore the concept of harvesting in light of First Peoples knowledge and practices. Students develop experiments that compare the impact of various harvesting methods on the growth of a particular plant.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/scarfedigitalsandbox-teach-educ.sites.olt.ubc.ca\/files\/2020\/02\/ScienceG10.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science Lesson<\/a><br \/>\nAn interesting resource on First Nations ways of harvesting is:<\/p>\n<p>Kimmerer, R. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. doi:10.1017\/9781108552998.004<\/p>\n<h4>Art Lesson<\/h4>\n<p>Students explore a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.umanitoba.ca\/qa-with-trc-bentwood-box-artist-luke-marston\/\">Bentwood box<\/a>, constructed by Coast Salish artist Luke Marston that is carved from red cedar to represent First Nations, Inuit and Metis cultures. During Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) events people placed personal items into the box to symbolize their journey toward healing. Students are introduced to the artist, his context and intentions. They also explore the Museum app <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/ca\/app\/cmhr\/id916923574\">CMHR<\/a>.
