I’ve created this story with my students in mind. <\/p>\n

I teach ELL and my students are International and new permanent residents to Canada. Some are happy to be here; some are not. It’s important to me that they all know I recognize their stories, their histories, their inherent value. It’s also important that they are open to learning about Canada. <\/p>\n

Many of them are stuck here now; others choose to stay. Either way, a positive attitude about the challenging task ahead of them will be beneficial. They will need to learn about Canada in addition to tackling English.<\/p>\n

In the 23 slides that PhotoShow allows me, I’ve tried to include the major demographic groups, including a couple pictures of a couple places I know a couple of our students are from, while not being exclusive to those majority groups.<\/p>\n

The story is not all-encompassing. I see that as beneficial: it can relay the message it is designed to relay, while leaving the door open for potential follow-up projects by the students whereby this could be the example. Students could then create similar projects in which they can begin to tell their stories.<\/p>\n

I’ve aimed to keep the language relatively simple but also natural. I cannot exclude modal verbs, for example, and my phrases span frames. So, there may be issues to reflect on with the students in that sense, but the essence of the story is to connect and create a welcoming ambiance.<\/p>\n
