{"id":6,"date":"2010-05-22T23:11:29","date_gmt":"2010-05-23T07:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/schrader\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2010-10-07T22:12:46","modified_gmt":"2010-10-08T06:12:46","slug":"flight-path","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/schrader\/etec-565\/flight-path\/","title":{"rendered":"Flight Path"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>So I\u2019m starting my ETEC 565  adventure, cleared for take-off.\u00a0 I\u2019m excited.\u00a0 After being fairly  theory based so far in my program and then having signed up for more  theory this summer, I\u2019m happy to have switched one of my courses to  565.\u00a0 I\u2019m an applications kind of girl.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 I like theory as much as the next, but I learn  by doing and if we stuff too much theory in this little brain without  using it in application, well, it will all get jumbled up: all files, no  folders &amp; good luck finding anything.\u00a0 Watching <em>you<\/em> ride <em>your<\/em> bike does me no good when <em>my<\/em> car breaks down and <em>I <\/em>need  to get somewhere.\u00a0 Let me play.<\/p>\n<p>So, in a personal realm, I\u2019m known as neither decisive nor demanding \u2013 unless we\u2019re  talking about behavioural expectations of my charges, who are typically ELL students recently arrived in Canada (Surrey) from Asia.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been teaching since doing my B.Ed in 2004, also at UBC, with the exception of a year off to have my son, now 5, and another year now with my 3 month old daughter.\u00a0 Before that, I was in the restaurant business which I left to complete my undergrad (B.A. in Psych and English) and teach.\u00a0 When I do get decisive &amp; strict, it&#8217;s mostly Ps and Qs type  stuff:\u00a0 I disagree with this newfangled concept that an apostrophe should  be used with acronyms and abbreviations to indicate plural, so Ps and  Qs rather than P\u2019s ad Q\u2019s.\u00a0 These letters  are owning nothing in this case.\u00a0 Argue with me if you wish.\u00a0 I\u2019m open  to a good line of logic as to why I should accept popular consensus.\u00a0 But here we go.\u00a0 This is my nutshell of what I want from 565:\u00a0  technological confidence with the ability to apply.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"I want to be able to:\">I want to be able to:<\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> create and operate an online classroom, including discussion,  whiteboard visuals, viable assessments, and all the usual classroom  stuff;<\/li>\n<li>improve my knowledge &amp; use of html (assuming I should have some  know-how here for goal #1).\u00a0 Some degree of progress should be easy.\u00a0 I\u2019m still at the  starting line on this one;<\/li>\n<li>use Moodle.\u00a0 Again with my assumptions, I think this goes  hand-in-hand with goal #1.\u00a0 Oh, sub-goal:\u00a0 find out what Moodle actually is.\u00a0\u00a0 I know it&#8217;s an LMS&#8230;which was helpful once I remembered what LMS is (Learning Management System), but that much info just doesn&#8217;t feel like enough.\u00a0 <a title=\"Moodle@Met\" href=\"http:\/\/moodle.met.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">MET&#8217;s Moodle site<\/a> that I linked to through <a title=\"Discursive Production\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/egan\/\" target=\"_blank\">John&#8217;s site<\/a> helped, along with <a title=\"e.g.\" href=\"http:\/\/moodle.met.ubc.ca\/course\/category.php?id=13\" target=\"_blank\">those<\/a> who let guests visit their Moodle classes.\u00a0 (Thanks!)<\/li>\n<li>become familiar with options other than Moodle,\u00a0 like <a title=\"Desire2Learn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desire2learn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Desire2Learn<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>become familiar and proficient with non-traditional teaching  methods, perhaps unique to technology environments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That should do it for now.\u00a0 Five hopefully attainable goals.\u00a0 I  hope I\u2019m not missing something big here.\u00a0 In my naivete, I could well  be, but that\u2019s where you get to smirk to yourself and drop me a witty  comment with a hint of sarcasm that I will miss in my earnst &amp;  seriousness to try to learn stuff as quickly as I can.\u00a0 And truly, there  is so much I am so far behind on in the technology realm, the more you  wish to tell me outright, the better.\u00a0 (Besides, I\u2019m a victim of social  media.\u00a0 I\u2019m a sucker for comments &amp;
