Documentary about Zheng He

This is a documentary about a Chinese explorer/geogpraher, maybe engineer named Zheng He. Chinese, huh? Did I post on the wrong sight, no really he was also brough up a Muslim. This documentary descibes his upbringing in a part of rural China where Islam was practiced, and is still practices today. But heres the question, would you consider him an Islamic scientist/explorer? He didn’t really serve under a Muslim dynasty and he wasn’t surrounded by a strong Muslim presence for much of his work. I guess this just proves to show that the whole concept of Islamic science in history is somewhat ambigious.

Whats even more fascinating is that Zheng He kind of represents a hyrid between two prominent intellectual civilizations, the Islamic and Chinese ones. His accomplishments would have integrated things he learnt from his religion, his contact with other Muslims and his lessons from Chinese society. Also notice how history about him is tough to come by, it is not very transparent. This is common to what we have seen for many other scientists as well, good thing to think about.

I haven’t watched the whole thing, there’s 14 parts but it definetely seems worthwhile. I sorta wish I’d wrote my wiki about him.

here’s what I have written:

From the ninth century to the fifteenth century, scholars and scientists from various parts of the vast Islamic Empire contributed extensively to various fields such as mathematics, astronomy, geography, chemistry, medicine, and pharmacology, among others(3).  During this period, a so called “Islamic Golden age”—similar to the European Renaissance—was concurrent to the supposed “Dark Ages” of Europe(3).

During this Golden Age Muslims were motivated and inspired by Islam to understand the world better, as doing so was deemed a form of worship to Allah(3). Consequently, the sole reason behind focus of Muslims to understand mathematics and astronomy, for instance, was not merely for religious purposes (e.g. determining time of daily prayer, determining location of Ka’ba)(3).

In the field of mathematics, Muslims were influenced greatly by the works of the Greeks and the Indians (4). Perhaps the most important contribution to mathematics was the Indian place-value system, which was first introduced by Al-Khwarizmi (4). This is the numerical system used in the Western world today, mistakenly referred to as the “Arabic Numerals”(2).  In addition, the development of the decimal system currently used by Al-Uqlidisic changed the world of mathematics dramatically.

The Muslims spent a considerable amount of time and effort translating the work of ancient Greeks, such as Euclid, Archimedes, Diphantus, Nicomachus, Appolonius and various other Greek thinkers in other fields than mathematics (4).  With the completion of translation of Greek works by the 9th century, the field of mathematics reached a peak between the 10th and 12th centuries(4).

Muslim scientists expanded on arithmetic and geometric knowledge inherited from the Greeks.  For instance, Kashi used the principles used to find the square and cube roots of a number to find the 5th root of a number as large as 4424089450688.  In geometry, for example, muslim’s expanded Euclid’s rule for constructing a pentagon and expanded it to construction of any polygon.

In addition, Khwarizmi made a substantial contribution to the field of mathematics by publishing a book on algebra, wherein he provides a formula for solving all types of linear and quadratic equations(2). When translated nearly 300 years later into Latin, Europe had been introduced to a concept they had never known about (3).  Moreover, Thabit ibn Qurra utilized algebra and geometry to explain  geometric equations geometrically (1).

Muslims expanded and developed various fields, such as mathematics, by applying principles from one field to another. In mathematics, the cross-application of geometry, algebra, and arithmetic resulted in vast contributions to this field (2).

For instance, through mixing geometry and algebra, Umar Khayyam was able to solve equations whose root was not known algebraically using geometry (2). Moreover, one important contribution from Khayyam, namely the use of auxiliary curves and geometric shapes to solve third degree equations, is mistakenly attributed to Rene Descarts (2). Another similar misattribution is that of attributing the work of A-TTusi to use the concept of derivative to demonstrate the value of an unknown whose cubic function is a maximum to another French Mathematician, Francois Viete (2).

Islamic scientists influenced mathematics greatly, which likely helped the Europeans in their Renaissance (1).

I wrote about Şerafeddin Sabuncuoğlu a Turkish surgeon. Initially i wanted to delete all of what it had and just have my stuff but wiki wouldn’t let me so i posted my paragraph at the beginning because the previous person didn’t write much and what they wrote was plagiarised from another webpage.

Serafeddin Sabuncuoglu was born in 1385 and died in 1470 at the age of 85. He was not only the author but also calligrapher and graphic artist of this surgical textbook. He is best known for 3 scientific books: 1. Pharmacognosy, which is mainly a translation of Zahire-i Hazemsahi, but also added his own chapter. 2. Mucerrbname (the experiment book), 3. Cerrahiyyetu-i Haniyye “surgery of the imperial court.” He told his students “Keep your compassion separate from your fame and ambition.” [1] Born in Amasya, one of the ancient cities of central Anatolia, he was an Ottoman,Turkish surgeon and physician (doctor). He practiced 14 years in Amasya hospital. He is most famous for his surgical book “the earliest paediatric surgical atlas: Cerrahiye-i Ilhaniye.” He wrote the book in 1465 in Turkish. It contains pictures and diagrams of paediatric surgical procedures, trials and new techniques. The book contributed many vital and key information and presented several new ideas to surgical literature. His contributions were based from the Greek, Roman, Arabic and Turkish paediatric surgeries. The book includes 4 major parts: Cauterisation techniques, General surgery including paediatric and plastic surgery, Orthopaedics, and Medical preparations innovated by him (Sabuncuoglu). In his manuscript he illustrated and explained numerous surgical techniques, incisions and instruments. It included theoretical and practical points about paediatric surgery. He was one of the first surgeons to utilize and draw on various drainage techniques and materials for neurosurgical procedures in paediatric cases. He also mentioned the importance of the implications of haemorrhage during neurosurgical operations and supposed that contact of cerebrospinal fluid and blood was associated with a extremely lethal outcome. He was a immense advocator of a long post-operative drainage period for prevention of haematoma and infection. Serafeddin Sabuncuoglu was the first person to describe the classical position for gynaecological examination and pointed out the importance of female physicians rather than the midwives which was not at all the case with . There are 3 original handwritten copies of sabuncuoglu’s book two of which are found in the Istanbul in (the Istanbul national library of faith and the Capa Medical history department. The third copy is in Paris’s National library. [2] He lived in the 15th century in Amasya during the early period of the Ottoman Empire. He practiced medicine in Amasya Hospital and at the age of 80 wrote his book. He wrote the first Turkish medical text book. The book (Cerrahiye-i Ilhaniye) consisted of 3 chapters, 191 topics and 472 pages. None of the 3 copies that exist at the moment are complete and they all differ somewhat from one another. Serafeddin Sabuncuoglu operated through the human body well before the advance progress of the sterile technique and modern anaesthesia. He used mandrake root and almond oil for analgesia and general anaesthesia. He discusses surgical and operational anaesthesia and says some patients might resist the anaesthesia, in other words their bodies might reject it and the outcome might not be the same and so he suggest a narcotic medicine called murkid to be set for just in case. [3]

My edits to Wikipedia were split between 2 articles:

1. Edited the “Science in the Islamic World” section of the article entitled “The History of Science.” I added two new paragraphs, one about Ibn-Sina (several other prominent Islamic scientists were featured but not him, and I felt that he was too important to be left out), and another about the transition between the Golden Age in Islam and the emerge of science in Europe, as I felt there was a lack of continuity in the article.

Ali ibn Isa (940-1010AD) is considered one of the most famous physicians of the tenth century. His famous Notebook of the Oculists combined information obtained from both Greco-Roman and Arab sources. The book encompassed information on treatment and classification of over one hundred different eye diseases. In the book, eye diseases were sorted by their anatomical location. The Notebook of the Oculists was widely used by European physicians for hundreds of years. Ibn Isa’s book was one of the first, along with Hunayn ibn Ishaq’s Ten Treatises on the Eye, to illustrate anatomy of the eye. Specifically, Ibn Isa illustrated the optic chiasm and brain [3].

Ibn Isa was the first to describe and suggest treatment for an array of diseases. For example, he was the first to discover the symptoms of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Syndrome (VKH) – ocular inflammation associated with a distinct whitening of the hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes [4]. Ibn Isa was also the first to classify epiphora as being a result a result of overzealous cautery of pterygium. In addition to this pioneering description, Ibn Isa also suggested treatments for epiphora based on the stage of the disease – namely treatment in the early stages with astringent materials, for example ammonia salt, burned copper, or lid past and a hook dissection with a feathered quill for chronic stages of epiphora [2]. Ibn Isa is also thought to be the first to describe temporal arteritis, although Sir Jonathan Hutchinson (1828-1913) is erroneously credited with this [1].

Shams al-Din Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Khalili worked in Damascus, Syria at the Umayyad Mosque as a religious timekeeper (muwaqqit) for the majority of his life. Other than al-Khalili’s occupation, little is known about his life. He lived at the same time as Ibn al Shatir – the famous Arab astronomer [2]. Al-Khalili is known for two sets of mathematical tables he constructed, both totaling roughly 30,000 entries. He tabulated all the entries made by the celebrated Egyptian Muslim astronomer Ibn Yunus, except for the entries that al-Khalili made himself for the city of Damascus. It is evident that number manipulation did not exhaust al-Khalili as he computed 13,000 entries into his ‘Universal Tables’ of different auxiliary functions which allowed him to generate the solutions of standard problems of spherical astronomy for any given latitude. In addition to this, he created a 3,000 entry table that gave the direction of the city of Mecca (the Qibla) for all latitudes and longitudes for all the Muslim countries of the 14th century [1]. Knowledge of the direction of the Qibla is essential in Islam because Muslims pray in the direction of Mecca. The values present in al-Khalili’s tables have been determined to be amazingly accurate – indeed they have been calculated to be accurate up to three or four significant decimal digits. Up to the present time, it is not known how exactly al-Khalili went about calculating each of his entries [3].

Prophetic Medicine “Tibb al Nabawi”

Muslim scientists have been always influenced by the words and practices of the Prophet. Not only did the prophet of Islam Muhammad (PBUH) deal with the religious aspect of the religion, but also he dealt with various topics and aspects of the Muslim-everyday life. Prophetic Medicine refers to the actions and words of the prophet in regards to diseases, treatment of diseases, and caring of patients. He recommended many  supplication for the sick. In the medical Islamic science, an effort has been put to save the exact words of the Prophet’s advice regarding the practice of medicine. His sayings dealt with sickness, health, hygiene, and some references to specific diseases such as ophthalmia, pleurisy, and leprosy. His recommendations included the use of honey, milks of camels, and other natural substances. Not only these recommendations were often practiced by physicians, but also they are currently subject of contemporary research topics. After the prophet’s death, it is not very surprising that many scholars have been influenced and decided to take medicine as a path of life. One of the most important works is “Al Tibb al Nabawi” of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya. In his book, he points out to specific remedies recommended by the Prophet. Jawziyya also deals with pharmacological studies on the use of various herbs and natural substances. Jawziyya also elaborates on the relation between medicine and religion. Finally, it is worth to mention that some of these practices are being adopted by modern medicine and are being tested out in many researches centers around the world.

The Father of Surgery

Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi –known to Europeans as Albucasis- is the father of surgery in the Islamic Middle East during the middle ages. He lived form 936 to 1013AD. Along with Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariya’ al-Razi (Rhazes), Ali ibn al-‘Abbas al-Majus”i (Haly Abbas), and Ibn Sina (Avicenna), al-Zahrawi devoted his entire life to the advancement of medicine as a whole and surgery in particular. (1) He wrote to Cordoba an encyclopaedia called Kitab al Tasrif composed of thirty books discussing different medical topics and procedures including childish, dentistry, and patient-doctor relationship. This 1000 year old encyclopaedia also includes anatomical descriptions and classifications of diseases.(1) The last chapter in the treatise was entirely devoted to surgery. He introduced the history of surgical literature and illustrated a collection of various instruments. The illustrations were circulated in both Arabic language, Hebrew, Turkish, and Latin translation as manuscripts separated form the rest of the encyclopaedia.(2) His work described to what is known nowadays as neurosurgical diagnosis, surgical treatment of head injuries, skull fractures, headaches, spinal injuries and many other medical processes. In his life, he also contributed to ophthalmology, pharmacology and nutrition. Cautery (Kayi in Arabic) was a technique often used by Zahrawi.(3) In facts, he preferred it over the use of knife. Zahrawi was on of the first to discover and expand on this procedure which is used wildly in our world till nowadays.
